Moscow farmers fit cows with VR headsets to improve their mood and boost milk production

The virtual reality industry has grown considerably since the first full-sized headsets hit the market several years ago, but not just in the realm of gaming. VR is being used in the medical field, in the real estate industry, and even for farming and agriculture purposes.

Some of these uses are a bit more bizarre than others, and you need look no further than a recent experiment conducted by Russian farmers in Moscow for evidence of that. During the experiment, which is ongoing, farmers fitted their cows with altered VR headsets in the hopes of improving the overall "emotional mood" of their herd.

The farmers teamed up with VR developers and vets to simulate a believable (for cows) virtual summer field environment for the cows in question to enjoy. The results were promising: the cows' behavior certainly seemed to improve, and experts noticed "reduced anxiety" among the animals.

Next, the farmers taking part in this experiment hope to test whether or not the VR headsets, and the resulting mood difference will lead to better milk production among their cattle. We don't know when that phase of the test will begin, however.

The ethics surrounding this experiment are certainly up for debate, but there is something to be said for trying to improve the emotional welfare of farm animals. After all, many farms throughout the world are more akin to factories, and the cattle contained within don't always live in the best of conditions.

Still, we're curious to hear your thoughts on the matter. Whether you have moral qualms with this experiment, or you think it's a great idea, feel free to sound off in the comments below.

I believe most of the percieved "reduced anxiety" is the same effect as putting blinders or pacifier on a horse.

I'd really love too see the summer meadow they have. Bet minecraft looks better.
Will not be surprised if the russians will put the VR sets on chickens and geese in hope get golden eggs. Hopefully they will also send the same VR set to trump and he will get the hell out of the WH and move to the russian wonderland

Living in Russia is hard, even for local cows. They probably know something concerning their future. No surprise that things get better for you when you try to escape from such a reality.

But in fact it is all about living outside of Moscow city. They don't have milk farms in the city, bears on the streets only.

I wonder if they have a special model for breeding? You know, porno for bovine to make the bulls more productive and the cows more submissive ...... in the bull tapes do the cows have little black strips of tape over their eyes?????

That's how new memes are born. Just when you think you've seen it all...

I thought the exact same thing! This is how the matrix started, first they test it on farm animals and then the full enslavement of humanity is next XD

Probably Goat Simulator...

Seriously though, this can't actually help improve milk production. What a load of hooey.
My guess, and it's just a guess, is that better moods = more milk. It would make some amount of sense, but I don't know if it has scientific backing or not.

I'm thinking that the concluding comment "...cattle contained within don't always live in the best of conditions" is a grave understatement!
