Need help figuring out what CPU to upgrade with

HEy people
I was just wondering if you guys new of a cheap but good gaming cpu for my compaq presario
Here are the specks

Motherboard description Motherboard manufacturer's name: Asus A8N-LA
HP/Compaq name: Nagami2L-GL8E

CPU/Processor Socket: 939
Supports the following processors:
AMD Athlon 64 X2
AMD Athlon 64
Sempron - i have the sempron

Front-side bus (FSB) 2000MT/s or 1600MT/s (processor dependent)
and is the Socket AM2 the same as the 939?

am2 is not compatible with 939. i think the best cpu for 939 is the fx60 which is like $300 on ebay u could look into getting a 4800x2 or 4600 but the prices are not nice on those parts. a $500 upgrade to a newer MB ,CPU ,And ram would be a huge improvement over what you have.

yeah, what Klepto said,
socket 939 got short shrift between socket 754 and am2. and now there are to many people chasing too few processors of the 939 flavor. an am2 x2 6000 is going for $69.00, and its 939 counter part will cost you $200.00. its not really worth investing in your 939 any longer. be careful however if you upgrade your mobo as klepto suggests . the Asus A8N-LA mobos in the presario's are 9.6 x 9.6 micros and the cases do not have room to fit a a standard atx mobo.I build alot of amd budget machines, if you decide to go am2, i would be happy to recommend a system if you want to give me a budget
