Hi there

I'm trying to network 2 XP Pro SP2 PC's together using a crossover cable.
I have done the following :-

1) Assigned the following IP Addresses :-
pc1 = 192.168.0.1
pc2 = 192.168.0.2
Subnet = 255.255.255.0

2) Named each PC Uniquely and assigned MSHOME as the Workgroup for both
3) I've Disabled WIN Firewalls & Nortons firewall from PC1 and McAfees from Pc2
4) I ve shared folders on both machines.
5) User Id's and passwords on both machines are the same when logging in
6) Windows Network setup wizard has been run

I can seen the shares in WIN Explorer, but I get a message saying I might not have right permissions -- I have ensured that permissions are correctly set

I can ping the loop back on both pc's (127.0.0.1)
Ping timeouts if I ping from pc1 to 2 and pc2 to 1

I'm pulling my hair out !!!! please help ... b4 I'm totally bald

chek network speed 10/100mbit, chek duplex, install netbios protocol, try to ping each pc.

if u have any questions please

Thanks for replying

Hi there

I ve set the speed to auto detect on both pc's.

Is NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS the same as NetBios ?
If it is NOT the same, where can I get hold of NetBios ?

Thanks

Ghost

yes correct, if that not help check your cable please or what you also can do set both of NIC on 10mbits, half duplex and try that. also try use another ip range like 10.0.0.1 to 10.0.0.X and subnet mask 255.255.255.0

Succes

Networking Via CrossOver cable - Totally Baffled :(

Hi there..

I have un installed Nortorns Firewall from pc 1 and Un installed McAfee's
firewall from pc2. I have also disabled Win Firewall from both PC's.

The crossover cable is less then a week old, when both pc's are
turned on... network connected icons (In the status bar) indicate that
the network is connected. But as mentioned before I can't not ping
pc1 from pc2 or pc2 from pc1. I'm pretty baffled

hmmm.... its a really strange issue. Really no idea.... did u istallend other application like zonealarm or something else that may block network traffic?

Just because a Crossover cable is new does not mean that it was not improperly crimped from the get go. A lousy crimp can result in a lousy network connection which is worse to troubleshoot than no connection. If at all possible, try your configuration with a known working crossover cable.
