Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Revisit: Is this the GOAT?

I was sad when my EVGA 1080ti finally died. It has a special place in my GPU drunk drawer. One of the best dGPU purchases I've made.

I loved my 1080 ti. I came from a 980, and the difference was ridiculous. Next to the 8800 gt, it has to be one of the best buys in terms of GPU's.

Funnily enough, the 2080 ti may have launched as one of the worst graphics cards in recent memory.

Shout out to the fx5000 series from nvidia for being the worst entire series of gpus released.

Man. I'm getting old.

Good article, Steve.
lol! but people raved for the FX 5200 in the small town I lived. That card was AWFUL! Though I didn't mind the 5900 XT I had, it was a pretty decent card, given it really wasn't that far behind the 5950 Ultra, which for so many reasons, was not a good card(the name was cool). Those ATI 9700/9800 cards were awesome though! Definitely gave the 5900 series a run. That generation leap to the 6800 series/ X800 series though.......life was good after that.

p.s. Tom's Hardware was good back then.

In Metro exodus with extreme settings at 3440x1440p using a 1080ti ftw hybrid I was getting 60 fps. ( minus rt). This game looks better than some games today 5 years later.

I still have a 1080ti in my Gaming PC, that I don't really use anymore. Still plays games like a champ, I don't need Maxed settings. For most games maxed settings doesn't add much to the image but has major impact to performance.

All of my current PC gaming time is via my Steamdeck on the sofa. Kids and family really kill your ability to lock yourself away in an office. Kinda miss the days I used to live in my small apartment where the office/kitchen/dining/living area was one space. I could game while my other half watched TV. PC in the living room would not fly today. Now I can watch Bluey and play fallout at the same time. 😁

Still have my AGP ATI X800 and Athlon 64 in the basement collecting dust. Caps are so old by now the damn thing would probably explode as soon as you boot up something like doom 3.

That system defended my teen years. Lot of Pirated games.

Oh man for sure a very golden era of PC Gaming/Computing. Unlocking pixel pipelines and all the good stuff. Probably best to just relive those memories in my heart. Pure joy.

In November 2017 I bit the bullet and bought an Asus ROG Strix Gaming GTX 1080 Ti graphics card for 820€. Guess what? It had attrocious coil whine, so I returned it. That month I also bought an Asus ROG Swift PG278QR gaming monitor. Guess what? It had attrocious light bleed and numerous dead pixels. I also returned it. Just an example of what we're dealing with in the real world.

I still use my EVGA FTW3 GTX 1080ti ICX. It was among if not the fastest GTX 1080ti with amazing cooling.

It's great for all those arcade games, even 2025 releases, and some Indie titles. I do OC it though to get that extra bit.

Favourite card of all time. I use ASUS ROG Strix RTX 3080ti gaming OC for modern games, and still in Jan 2025 I can play all new releases at decent if not MAX settings. Ray tracing should be off however.

The GTX 1080ti won't cut it for newer games, but it still is worth having. Amazing longetivity, very reliable, and fine for pretty much all pre 2020 games at high settings.

One stand out is Doom 2016 which can be fully maxed out, with fps well over 80fps. The 11GB Vram is only one GB less that my RTX 3080ti, which IMHO shows how Nvidia is no longer really interested in gamers. (All A.I. and super shiny leather Jackets prancing around).

A shame. The GTX 1xxx gen was the last gen where NV really wanted to do well by gamers in terms of the best performance, importantly at sensible prices. Nothing sensible about $2000 flagship cards of 2025 compared to $700 flagship cards (accounting for inflation too) of 2017.

We need AMD, or possibly Intel to step up and start sensible pricing again.
