Oblivion won't start

I just installed Oblivion after getting it back from a friend. But when I try to start the game I can only get past the launcher. All that happens is that a small black window pops up in the upper left hand corner of the screen and then the game stops responding.

Ive already tried reinstalling the game and downloading the newest driver for my video card.

I have a Gateway with 3.2ghz Pentium D 940, 2 gigs of ram, and the video card is a 9800 gt.

This is all with windows XP.

Nope, just did that, still wont start.
