  1. Samsung Gear VR owners will soon find a lot more uses for their headsets, as Facebook-owned Oculus has announced that it’s adding a whole host of new social features to the VR platform, including games and videos.

Starting today, Gear VR users will be able to create a profile and search for others on the platform by their real name or Oculus username. It’ll then be possible to interact with friends around the world in the virtual space. Users will also be able to leave reviews for all apps available in the Oculus store.

Oculus is introducing two new social games specifically created for VR headsets. The first, Social Trivia, lets you and up to four friends compete in a battle of knowledge; the second, a new, co-op multiplayer version of third-person adventure game Herobound: Gladiators, lets players work together to conquer goblins and demons in arena battlefields. Integrated voice chat will be used in Herobound for gamers to coordinate with each other and strategize in real time.

As for the video side of thing - starting next week, you’ll be able to connect your Facebook account with Oculus Video to personalize your 360-degree video feed based on the pages and people you follow. You’ll even be able to ‘like’ and share Facebook 360 videos from within VR.

Additionally, Oculus has added the ability to create virtual rooms so groups of friends can sit down and watch Twitch or Vimeo streams together. The company added that it will be releasing new tools for developers to make more social VR games and apps.

The Gear VR is considered by many to produce the best smartphone-powered VR experience available right now. As more owners of Samsung’s recent smartphones buy the headset, expect an increasing amount of virtual reality content to become available.

This is so silly, floating heads in cartoon form is more realistic than the video conferences we now use?
  4. Why do I think that instead of watching all the cool stuff VR could be used for, I will be trying to avoid advertising, and some of the stuff mentioned in this article?

Anything with an audience is a target for advertisers. It won't be easy to look away when the ads are strapped to your face now will it?
