Following Intel and most recently Corsair, OCZ has released a new firmware for its Summit solid-state drives which brings TRIM support to users of Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system and idle garbage collection for Windows Vista and XP users. Available from OCZ's download page, the VBM19C1Q update promises to restore performance on Summit drives back to new conditions by freeing space and consolidating blocks of data.

Corsair's Performance and OCZ's Summit series are both based on Samsung storage controllers so the close release for their respective new firmware is no coincidence. Like the former, OCZ warns users to backup their data prior to the update as the process will completely wipe the drive's content.

To apply the update you'll need to create a bootable USB drive or floppy disk, set your motherboard's storage controller to IDE mode, boot into the utility, and follow the instructions. More information is available here.
