Passports may soon become obsolete as facial recognition and smartphones take over

I will pass on that I am more likely to damage or lose my phone than I am my physical documents.
Replacing ID is costly and time consuming. Currently I only carry the ID I need that day.

I'd feel better losing my phone, because the data can be retrieved quicker and free with little fear it could be used by criminals without my fingerprint.

The title is completely incorrect. So far no one has come up with an alternative to a passport. What the article talks about it the change from a physical token passport to a vertual token passport. Since this has been going on for many types of physical tokens for many years it is hardly news that it is happening for travel passports.

Have you ever traveled to third world countries ? Police isn't always here to serve and protect.
I believe the correct term is developing countries as most of the “third world” is actually fairly stable today.
I’ve also used digital identification in other countries.
As others mentioned: you don’t actually unlock your phone. You bio-id an app and tap to transfer data.
It’s an app or wallet card.
In iOS you can do it from the Lock Screen either way.

I cannot wait until you can have a digital DL and such on your phone here in my state. Seems pointless to make you have to carry around a wallet just for your DL, when I could just bring my phone and not worry about it.
So instead of having to carry your DL, you will be required to carry a phone. Doh...........

Some data is a lot harder to restore when it is cryptographically tied to the the device it is on, like most of the digital ID systems in use.

That is true.
I was locked out of my Google account for 24 or 48 hous because my passkey wasn't working or user error. Good times.

Nothing wrong with that unless you have something to hide. What are you worried about them seeing?

Jeez. If I had a pound for every time I've heard THAT one trotted-out over the last decade, I would in reality be a very rich man by now.

I challenge you; show me a perfectly clean, law-abiding, totally above-board individual. No? You can't, can you.....because "perfect" stereotypes like that only exist in the wet dreams of politicians. Everybody - and I MEAN "everybody" - has some kind of skeleton in their closet. Often, people don't even know it's there.....but global surveillance & information systems will find it.

"New" ain't always "better". Novelty wins out short-term, because of all those folks looking for the next instant 'buzz'.....but when sense eventually prevails, they often come to the conclusion that it perhaps wasn't all it was hyped-up to be.

Miq.
