Philips has announced their 2012 television line-up highlighted by the Philips 6000 and 7000 series (PFL6007 and PFL7007) units that support dual-view gaming. The feature will allow two players to see different images on the same display, effectively rendering current “split-screen gaming” a thing of the past.

The televisions utilize 3D technology to essentially play a trick on the human eye. With both players wearing special 3D glasses, one player only sees images from the left side of the screen while the other gamer only sees images from the right side. The beauty of the system is that it expands the half-screen view for each gamer so they see a full-screen image as they would if they were playing by themselves.

Furthermore, this eliminates screen cheating in first-person shooters or other competitive titles where seeing your opponent’s HUD would give you an advantage.

As Pocket-lint points out, the feature is much the same to what Sony did with their PlayStation 3D Display last year and at least somewhat similar in theory to Sharp’s plans way back in 2005. However you look at it, it doesn’t make the technology any less impressive, especially for those who have not seen it yet.

Philips plans to launch the 6000 and 7000 series units in sizes from 32-inches up to 55-inches. The units should hit retail shelves sometime in Q2 although pricing has yet to be determined.

Do you think dual-view televisions will change how people play games and watch programming or is it just another fad that will be short-lived?

Permalink to story.

This won't change anything as far as watching normal TV because you can't split up the sounds. You'd need to use headphones, which sucks.

For some households this will be a really cool feature though I suspect for most it will be a passing fad.

I think it would be really cool and useful if software and console developers jumped on board. However, I think this would still have an "my friends over playing" so I don't have full capability of my system. Much as you see with a decrease in graphics due to split system resources in split screen play.

I'm assuming at the point that "dual-view gaming" would be marketable, 3-D gaming would be mainstream (and awesome), which would ultimately sacrifice your 3-D gaming experience, in place for 2-D, in-order for you and your buddy to play side-by-side.

Keep your sweat pants on, stay at home, and enjoy being able to sign off when ever you want to. Or rather, wait for your friend to get the hint you want him to leave by cutting off his mountain dew supply.

Hmm, maybe, just maybe they've given me a reason to buy 3D on a televsion set? Before it was just a gimmick which I do without until they improve the effect and omit the need for glasses.

I suspect the writer doesn't play much split screen. Screen cheating doesn't give you an advantage, it levels the playing field.

As for the TV itself... Sounds pretty cool, but it will likely be a fad. My experience with 3D has been that after the initial excitement wears off the finicky nature of the product becomes more troublesome than it's worth.

The concept is cool indeed, but the reality of it is that current consoles are weak, and they dumb down the graphics in split screen games in order to be able to render at full frames. Knowing that the TV will take half of a 720p image and scale it to full screen is horrid as the image will be ugly.

In response to Elshotte:

Its all about greed and making money.
The last thing Microsoft wants to do is push the envelope for console gaming and make a super system thats inherits many of the latest and greatest visual technologies only available on a PC.
They will throw the DX11 term around alot to confuse the masses into thinking a 6670 is much better then a 256MB ATi in the current 360. Its not.

It's about making money off hapless kiddy gamers and thier moms purse's for another 5 years.

Does anyone know by any chance whether the 7000-8000 series of 2012 will have non-glare screens like previous years ?
This is because I really hate the glossy ones of the Korean and Japanese tv sets in which I am forced to look at the buttons of my shirt all the time.
