I was having all sorts of hangs with IE7 so upgraded to IE 8 Beta which stopped it and seemed to work fine, except for one error which is that any post to this forum causes a windows error report and a message saying the tab has been restored.
If I have Firefox open this error does not occur.
IE 8 says that most errors are fixed with SPIII so I installed it - seems OK but I cannot open Control Panel > System. All the other items in the control panel are OK.
Update 1
Nice BSoD just now and IT (The thing from the datapool) has lost all the saved passwords for all three browsers.
I suspect this was because I had disabled Kaspersky during the update and it got all mardy (upset/grumpy/stupid) because a lot of the system files had been changed and it had to relog them all when restarted.
More to come, no doubt.
Advice so far - XP SPIII is not for the fainthearted and I will still only do this as part of a new build/reinstall of XP
