Radeon 9070 XT vs. Radeon 7900 XTX: 50+ Game Benchmark

This last Spring, I found a refurbished 7900XTX for $699, so I decided to upgrade from my 7900XT. The best thing about it, is that it is the same XFX Merc 310 model that my 7900XT was, so I was able to maintain the same aesthetic inside of my tempered glass PC case. Performance has been more than satisfactory on my 3440x1440p monitor, and was noticeably uplifted over the 7900XTX.

Given the Mesa Gallium 3D drivers (as used in Linux) are basically unrelated to the Adrenalin drivers (as used in Windows) I wonder what affect that has on things? My guess is "FPS will be different but relative performance the same". It'd be interesting to see though (maybe not with 51 games, but a handful at any rate.)

Great review and taking time to look back at an older GPU. To me, it just shows that the RX 7000 series is quite inefficient when it’s clearly beefier when it comes to specs, uses more power and performs closely to the 9000 series.

Thanks for this really good comparison. With 51 games used for testing it gives everyone a decent idea about the two GPUs as of Late 2026.

Keep up the great work. Must have taken a long time!!

I finally decided to upgrade from 3070 to 9070XT last week. Overall experience is good.

What I do not understand is why they force the card to +300W since it has no performance loss at 250W. UV -80mv and -15% power target makes the card run cool and no issues.

Only if you utilize those extra 8GB on the XTX. Otherwise 16GB and identical performance at lower power is generally better.
That is a very good point and I bought my XT based on power consumption and RT performance (which I don't use). At that time the XTX was cheaper and not desired due to it lacking INT8. However, the XTX has surpassed my card due to the extra 8GB RAM.

I was originally intending to sell this card once prices increased and I am waiting to see what happens in a few months before deciding what to do as I won't make the profit that I was hoping I'd make and I'm enjoying this card far more than I enjoyed my old 6800 (massive performance difference).

Could you please share a bit more - how you do this: using "AMD software adrenalin edition" or some other (3rd party) utility. Then where you see "no performance loss": check FPS in (which) games or run some benchmarks?

Using the embedded tools in the driver now. But they fail to stay the same after restart sometimes. Thinking to get back to afterburner.
At 1440p medium-high settings. Minimum or no RT used. FSR off or native resolution used.
Star wars Outlaws 100fps
Mafia The old country 165fps - monitor limit is 165 and I can see no point going over this value.
Assassin Creed Shadows 85fps
Hogwarts Legacy 163 fps
Avatar Frontiers of Pandora 130fps

There is 1 to 3 fps difference with power limit to 100 or 85% but from 310W to 260W.
Under volt -80 is the stable value for me
Zero RPM disabled and max fan speed 30%
55C on core temp 75C hotspot.
Mem temp max 85C.

What I find funny is that memory temp wont go more down than 52C, even with no load and max fan 20 minutes. Like they have a blanket not thermal pads.

Card is XFX Swift RX 9070 XT OC Gaming Edition.

The AMD Radeon Settings You Should Actually Be Using (TechSpot)

There is a trick in Windows that you need to do to ensure the undervolt settings stay after a reboot. I don't remember, but just search the internet and you should find them.

Use the Radeon Adrenalin Software for tuning and overclocking under the Performance Tab and then Tuning. To reduce power draw use the Power Tuning section. It has a slider that works to increase or decrease the TBP (total board power) of your card by a %. Maximum of +10% and minimum of -30%. TBP varies by GPU make, model, vendor, etc. You will have to check your GPU's TBP value in order to target a specific wattage and set the slider accordingly.

Say your GPU has a TBP of 304 watts and you want ~250W power limit. You would then set the slider to -18% to = 249.3 watts.

Something Important To Note: It is a common misconception that applying an undervolt reduces power consumption for these cards. Using the voltage slider DOES NOT reduce power draw for RDNA4. This alters the voltage/frequency curve and ultimately allows the GPU to boost to higher clocks speeds within the same power budget. This can equate to more performance without drawing more power.

HOWEVER, stability while using undervolted settings is not guaranteed across all titles. It is not uncommon for it to cause crashes, blackscreens, drivers hangs/timeouts/etc. What works in one game is not guaranteed to work in another. 3DMark Benchmarks typically respond very, very well to UV, but those settings are rarely stable in any games. My (2) 9070's, Reaper and Nitro+, range between -120 to -170 pending the 3DMark Bench, but neither of them will play games w/o problems at anything lower than -70.

If all you want to do is reduce power draw, then use the power % slider.
