Why it matters: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's home was attacked on two separate occasions over the weekend, according to reports. On Friday, a Molotov cocktail was thrown at his property. Two days later, a car stopped and fired a gun at his Russian Hill home.

A 20-year-old man was arrested over allegedly throwing the Molotov on Friday. The San Francisco Standard reports that he was booked into San Francisco County Jail on Friday afternoon on suspicion of attempted murder, arson, possession or manufacture of an incendiary device, and other charges.

According to a police report, the suspect threw a bottle containing a flaming rag at the metal gate of 855 Chestnut Street at around 3:40 am.

Security guards at the property extinguished the fire, and the incident was captured on surveillance cameras. The Molotov bounced off the wall and no injuries were reported.

The San Francisco Police Department said that the suspect was detained outside OpenAI's Third Street offices after allegedly threatening to burn down the building. Officers recognized the man as the same person who attacked Altman's home.

Altman responded to the incident by publishing a post that included a photo of his husband and their child. "I am sharing a photo in the hopes that it might dissuade the next person from throwing a Molotov cocktail at our house, no matter what they think about me," he wrote.

The Standard reports that a second attack on Altman's home took place two days later on Sunday morning.

The police report states that on Sunday at 1:40 am, a Honda sedan with two people inside stopped in front of Altman's property. The person in the passenger seat then put their hand out the window and appeared to fire a round at the house before the car fled.

Two suspects, Amanda Tom, 25, and Muhamad Tarik Hussein, 23, were arrested and booked for negligent discharge. Three firearms were located and seized at the residence where the suspects were arrested.

It's fair to say that most of the public's reaction to AI has not matched the love and adoration expressed by CEOs. The number of layoffs caused by the technology continues to rise. The environmental impact of the data centers is enormous. Its use in surveillance, crime, and warfare is growing. And that's not even mentioning the amount of AI slop filling the web every day, or the fears of a rogue AI agent causing an existential threat.

Altman himself admitted in his post that "The fear and anxiety about AI is justified." He added that "we urgently need a society-wide response to be resilient to new threats."

Oh dear, what a shame, never mind...

$27 Million dollar home running a company thats billions in debt and produces nothing of value.

..ever feel the rules are different for the well connected.

Criticize Sam Altman, his work, or the broader impact of AI all you like. That debate matters.

But, reacting to violence like this with indifference—or worse, approval—is NOT a neutral stance. Normalizing political violence, by hand-waving it away, actively helps erode the basic standards of discourse and freedom that keep societal disagreements from turning into something far more dangerous.

Commentary that implies, or outright states, that a violent attack on someone’s home and family is a non-issue or a joke, is not principled criticism. The inability to draw a hard line against that specific, is not helping to advance a legitimate argument about a better future, it is actively helping to make it worse.

Oh great, Now this ******* can pretend to be a victim,
You don't feel having your home firebombed makes you a victim?
/smh

Not for anyone who understands even the rudiments of the US legal system. Altman's salary is being paid by owners of OpenAI. If they don't have a problem with his compensation, it's none of your business.

BTW, Amazon lost billions a year for many, many years before finally turning profitable. It's now approaching three trillion in market cap. It seems the connection between short-term profitability and long-term value is significantly more complex than you imagine.

At a factual level, yes. But humans are not purely logical creatures, and when you are Sam Altman, someone who advocates for replacing swathes of people with AI, creating massive invasions of privacy, and treating human like cattle, you are going to get a least a few of the 350+ million people in this country pissed off enough at you to do something about it, especially when there seems to be no way out of the bucket these days.

You're justifying domestic terrorism-- and for the worst of reasons. Every technological innovation since the discovery of fire has "replaced swathes of people", nor has Sam Altman "invaded" your privacy. Even a mass murderer doesn't deserve to have a home holding his family and children firebombed, and you refuse to condemn this?

What's your position on the firebombing of Tesla dealerships and the cold-blooded murder of UHC's CEO? Just a normal, natural reaction from people who aren't always "purely logical"?

You're a talking spread sheet that thinks AI will make you rich. The thing is that it won't because you have failed fundamental analysis. You may think yourself a brilliant investor, but so did the crypto bros. AI is far more likely to crash the economy than make everyone rich

I don't believe it's OK to attempt to murder people I disagree with politically. You do. As for AI, it's already saved my life, by detecting a tumor a human radiologist missed. And I'm far too risk averse to ever become truly wealthy from investing. Every time my AI stocks double, I simply sell half, bank the profits, and wait for it to happen again.

To be completely clear: throwing Molotov cocktails at someone's home where their family lives is indefensible, full stop. That said, the article listing job losses, environmental damage, surveillance use, and AI slop in the same breath as the attacks isn't editorializing — it's just context. The gap between how AI executives describe their work and how millions of people are experiencing its effects is real, and pretending it isn't doesn't make anyone safer.

In just the field of medicine alone, AI is already saving countless lives (it very likely saved mine a year ago). In the field of shipping logistics, AI is not only getting products faster to market, with less waste, but also saving hundreds of millions of gallons of fuel per year.

As for the absurd doomsayer predictions about the effects of AI on the job market, the US unemployment rate currently stands at 4.3% ... that is a full 1.5% below the historical average since WW2, and 0.7% below what economics normally define as "full employment".

Not sure the one they firebombed was one of the 12 houses he owns he was in at that moment
