Samsung has announced the upcoming release of a new portable media player bearing the Galaxy branding. The device, known as the Galaxy Player 5.8, features a chassis design that closely resembles the company’s flagship S3 smartphone but with an oversized 5.8-inch screen -- that’s even larger than the Galaxy Note. The media player runs Android 4.0 and the latest version of Samsung’s TouchWiz interface.

Known specs include either 16GB or 32GB of built-in storage, 960 x 540 display resolution, stereo speakers, a microSD slot, a front-facing VGA camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, and a big 2,500mAh battery. Samsung hasn’t provided any details on the processor used or the exact amount of RAM.

The company is also touting several education-focused features, including a dictionary, lectures software and a number of “Internet-rich educational content services” as part of its Learning Hub platform. There’s also AllShare Play streaming support and Samsung’s own ChatOn messenger service.

No details regarding pricing or availability have been disclosed thus far. It’s possible the Galaxy Player 5.8 will make an appearance at one of Samsung’s IFA 2012 press conferences at the end of this week, which will also be the setting for the launch of the next-generation Galaxy Note ‘phablet’.

it looks rectangular and with rounded corners.

DANGER!!!!

/sarcasm /uncertainty

It might be bigger than the Note but the lower resolution makes it much less interesting.

960 x 540 pixels and they're calling it a "media player"? Maybe in 2004.... We have plenty of 1920x1080 content available online, so this resolution really isn't enough. Com'on Samsung! Get it together!
