Seagate aims to launch 50TB HAMR hard drives in 2027

I Smell Teras: While reporting its financial results for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2026, Seagate also shared some interesting technology updates. The HDD manufacturer is continuing to develop its HAMR-based storage products, with 50TB drives expected to become available for customer validation soon. Just a reminder: "customers" in this context means Big Tech and AI companies – certainly not the rest of us.

According to Seagate CFO Gianluca Romano, the US company is on track to achieve a storage density of more than 5TB per platter. In layman's terms, Seagate should soon be able to sell individual HDDs containing ten 5TB+ platters, resulting in more than 50TB of storage capacity on a single drive. In fact, this unprecedented level of storage density is already scheduled to reach the market in late 2027.

Romano and other top Seagate executives shared these details during the company's latest earnings call with shareholders. The Mozaic 4+ platform, Seagate's latest iteration of its namesake heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) technology, currently supports hard drives with capacities of up to 44TB. By the end of 2026, Mozaic 4+ models are expected to account for 50% of Seagate's HAMR exabytes shipped to select customers.

Romano further revealed that future HDDs featuring 5TB+ per platter will be based on Mozaic 5+, the third generation of Seagate's Mozaic technology to reach the market. The first Mozaic 5+ drives are expected to ship to customers for qualification later in 2027.

After passing Seagate's internal testing and validation procedures, the new drives will be delivered to OEM and data center customers for final approval. Following that process, 50TB drives should eventually become ready for broader adoption.

Seagate reiterated that sustained growth in areal density remains a key pillar of the company's strategy going forward. Drives capable of fitting more terabytes onto each platter can help keep HDD costs "relatively flat" while allowing Seagate to scale its exabyte production capacity without requiring unsustainable levels of capital expenditure to improve its manufacturing facilities.

Thanks to demand from AI hyperscalers and cloud service providers, Seagate's results for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2026 were decidedly positive. The company closed the June quarter with $3.6 billion in revenue, up 17% sequentially and 48% year over year. Demand for "cold" storage devices such as HDDs is so strong, Seagate CEO Dave Mosley said, that the majority of nearline exabyte output is already allocated well into 2028.

Seagate now generates most of its revenue from AI data centers and cloud giants, although hyperscalers are using HDDs to manage the "long tail" of their AI workloads. Cold storage has become essential for providing AI models and agentic AI systems with "context," Mosley said. The need to give AI agents a persistent data foundation across user interactions is driving storage procurement – and Seagate's revenue – to unprecedented levels.

Have anyone checked the prices for slow mechanical hard drives lately?

What's the point of releasing any cutting edge technology when most people can't even buy an old spinning drive without feeling they could have purchased an entire computer for the same price just 1 year ago.
 
It always amazes me that Seagate keeps pushing spinning disk tech to the level it has. It's analogous to TSMC progressively looking for nanometers.

I honestly thought HDD's were DEAD over 10 years ago, yet here we are today. Given the complexity of mechanical HDD's, it still boggles my mind that they don't all cost over $1000 each. They are truly a marvel of engineering and manufacturing efficiency. Why does sand compressed into some chips on a PCB board with a plastic case (SSD) cost more? CRAZY I SAY!

32tb Seagate drives (highest a consumer can get) are $700… I remember buying a 16tb iron wolf pro way back before Covid (summer 2019)… was $650… allowing for inflation, that’s not really much of a change…

A 4TB HDD is 2–2.5x what I paid in 2022. Pre-2024, prices of SSDs, HDDs, and RAM were great. We didn't know what was coming.

You are spreading misinformation or you got truly rip-off supposedly paying that much.

Typical spinning home grade hard drives even during the worst of COVID which was in 2020 were going in average for $300.00 for 16tb previously going for $250.00...Now that same drive goes for $600.00

I know that for sure because I bought one in 2020 and even then I felt ripped off.

Please don't be down-playing the hard drive crisis, because people like you are the reason these companies don't care to keep rising prices on everyone else.

In 1984, the cost of an IBM 300MB hard drive was $30K, or around $100K in today's dollars. It would take nearly 170 thousand of those drives to equal just one of these.

Typical spinning home grade hard drives even during the worst of COVID which was in 2020 were going in average for $300.00 for 16tb previously going for $250.00.
Why spread misinformation? Seagate's Exos X16 16TB drive was $629 when first released in June 2019. By mid 2020 (the worst of Covid) WD and Toshiba had entered the market, and prices were ~$450-$500.

Even today, you can buy these drives in the $500-$600 range, cheaper than 2020 when adjusted for inflation:

So you are saying a grandma with an old computer in need of a new spinning hard drive is cheaper for her to buy a higher end 16tb IronWolf HDD than the typical 16tb Scorpion Black since according to you it seems like it's the only hard drive it hasn't been affected by the crisis.

Grandmothers with old computers don't need 16TB drives of any sort. And please, fact check yourself. The 16TB Scorpio Black wasn't even released until the end of 2020, so please stop claiming you "bought it for $250" in 2019.

No… this article has nothing to do with “average people”… it’s about cutting edge 50tb HDDs…

These are for enterprise and prosumers… and prices for those - while high - are not much higher than they’ve ever been.
 
Yeah I bought a 18TB Seagate a few years ago for $280 'refurbished' (it had been on the marlket for a month so I figured it couldn't have that much wear and tear.). The typical prices for this size of drive really was closer to $400. Coiuld you find one for $250 at some point? Probably.

Really, though. HDD prices have gone up a bit. But the largest drives have gone up by far the most.

As for 'who would want a 50TB drive?'. There's a whole datahoarders reddit full if people who have 100s of TB of storage. What arer they doing with it? No idea, but there is SOME demand among home users.

Those of us who have large fileservers... I've currently got about 300TB allocated to my NAS over 16 drivers... 6x16tb, 5x20tb and 5x22tb on a synology 6-bay + 2 5-bay expansions... The 6-bay only supports 2 expansion units (which I already have), so to add more capacity, I'd have to upgrade my drives... 50tb ones would be awesome - but I'll probably just swap the 16tb ones with 32tb ones in the future... but... if lots of money comes in...
