In 1984, the cost of an IBM 300MB hard drive was $30K, or around $100K in today's dollars. It would take nearly 170 thousand of those drives to equal just one of these.

You cant take that comparison seriously. most hdd from that era were so expensive because there was no GLOBAL MARKET, it was a niche market and there were not enough global chains/suppliers and distribution to drive the market prices down + the most important aspect : adoption.
If you produce a product that costs a mansion nobody (except private banks and other private entities) IS GONNA BUY IT.
