Why do you want to be a software engineer? Why not figure out what kind of problem you want to solve, then learn the appropriate language.

You can either take the Uni/certificates path or you can build a curriculum for yourself. Depends on your time and perseverance. Start by finding areas that you think have a problem or are flawed and try to fix them, build your own projects for now and learn as you go.

If you desire to be part of a team writing new software, the CS degree is nearly a must. The major companies will require it as a requisite to an interview. They also disdain the certificate path -- they only say you know something about existing products, not fundamentals of creating new ones.
