Sony is preventing Fallout 76 cross-play

Facepalm: Sony seems to be frustrating gamers rather than reassuring them with its insistence on preventing cross-play with other consoles.

Here we go again. After catching a lot of flack for preventing cross-play on Fortnite, Sony is in the hot seat again for preventing cross-play on the upcoming Fallout 76.

Todd Howard, the well-known game director and creative lead for Fallout 76, responded to a German publication (via CNET) asking why Sony refused to support cross-play.

“You cannot do cross-play in 76”, said Howard. “ We’d really love that but right now we can’t. Sony is not as helpful as everyone would like.”

Sony is in an interesting position right now. As the overwhelming leader in console sales for this generation, they don't necessarily have a "business need" to open up cross-play between the other consoles. The number of PS4 sales are more than Xbox One and Switch combined (granted the Switch came out just last year) and Sony's likely betting on the fact that it's large install base is enough for multiplayer.

That said, having market share is one thing, having mind share is another. The PS4's dominance in first party exclusives is not likely going away, even with the start of a new console generation. However, a case could be made for gamers switching their primary console to Xbox simply because of the more gamer-friendly stance Microsoft has taken in recent years. Even the notoriously conservative Nintendo is becoming a little more gamer-friendly with its joint marketing campaign with Microsoft to show off cross-play on Minecraft.

Sony's tone deaf announcement of the $599 PS3 back in 2006 is what helped propel the Xbox 360 to market dominance last generation. Subsequently, Microsoft's tone deaf focus on non-gaming features of the Xbox One at a gaming conference helped propel the PS4 to early market dominance for this generation. Sony seems to making the same arrogant moves as it did during the PS3 days.

That's not to say Microsoft and Nintendo are completely innocent. Most people can see that Microsoft and Nintendo are doing this for the positive PR in order to get in gamers' good graces. They know the best way to sell consoles in the long term is to posture themselves as gamer-friendly as possible compared to big bad Sony. It seems that Sony is "confident" it can work out a cross-play solution but as of right now, it seems to be frustrating gamers rather than reassuring them.

Serious question as I haven't played any "cross-play" games. What's the big deal about this? Is it because friends that own an Xbox want to play with friends that own a PS4, vice versa? That's the only legit reason I can think of.

Yes. Also, developers of smaller multiplayer games can worry a bit less about any single console having a small player base.

That is part of it, but the biggest part to me would be having a larger player base to play with.

Rocket League and Minecraft are the best examples to think of. Technically all versions (PC, Xbox, PS, Switch, etc.) CAN play with each other, making one huge install base. Sony is blocking other console users from being able to play together: in Rocket League PC players could be matched with other PC players/Xbox players, Other PC Players/PlayStation players, but not Xbox/PlayStation in the same match.

This hinders matchmaking and less options when playing.

+1 (more) respect for Todd Howard now too.

If Sony's smart, they'll work this out before more big games come out bashing their anti-gamer stance on crossplay.

They might've won this generation, but they still need to think about the next...

There are some games where playing pc/console doesn't matter, like Minecraft or Rocket League as mentioned, but others will be way too unbalanced to be able to compete against keyboard/mouse combos. This is the first time I hear about Fallout 76 so I don't really what type of game it is.

Sony is not preventing anything, they can have the feature between, Xbox, PC and Switch none is preventing that lol...

This Todd Howard has something with Sony since ever everyone knows this and his helping Microsoft agenda to eat Playstation market share at any cost... and I hope Sony blocks the feature forever...

Payback time Microsoft, were comfortable with the way 360 was poised in the market you denied that same feature and now we are here...

Karma is a b*tch...

Sorry but SONY IS blocking it...because they don't like to play nice and we all know it... If a major game dev comes out and says sony is blocking it then sony is blocking it...

Sony is blocking for a good reason... if you can't see reason behind it please go back a few years and see what MS did when Sony asked for this and in the case of Nintendo don't forget that Playstation was a Sony and Nintendo project and suddenly Nintendo drops off and sides with Sony competitor, that's why you don't see Nintendo with Blu Ray drive and cressplay with Nintendo won't happen and I hope it never happens.

Microsoft and Nintendo are just searching for ways to cut the pie from Sony...

Stay strong Sony Me and the 80 Million players are happy without playing with Xboxers and Nintendos...
