Solved Strange Behaviour

I recently posted the following in the Windows OS forums, and was told to come to the malware forums instead to get my rootkit cleaned up! Any help will be appreciated!

I have a home-built PC that has been running ffor some time now quite well. However, a few months ago after performing a routine disk clean-up and defragment the OS failed to start. The only way to fix this is to do a system restore via the start-up recovery part of the windows OS.

If it is of any significance, avast found a rootkit in the C drive under Xaramin's software directory, under the name dynDNS.exe (I think but not sure, definitely had DNS in the name!). Could it be an infection causing this? Disk check was supposed to be launched during boot but I have seen no evidence of it happening.

The full PC details are below:
- AMD 8350 CPU
- Gigabyte 7950 Radion HD graphics card
- 16GB RAM dual channel at 1866mhz
- Asus m5a99x motherboard
- OCZ vertex 3 120GB SSD
- Western Digital Green hard drive
- Generaic CD drive
- Windows 7 Pro 64-bit (virtualisation enabled via hotfix for bulldozer CPU's)

Any ideas of why this could be happening? Also is any more information needed?

Thanks guys!

Hey Broni!

Thanks for the reply! I have gone through the steps listed on techspot, with the results being listed below:

Hey Broni!

Thanks for the reply! I have gone through the steps listed on techspot, with the results being listed below:

Step 1 - Anti Virus Scanning
I currently use avast anti virus, and performed both a boot-time and also a normal full system scan. Both times, it was unable to find any malicious software. However, it did come up a couple of times requesting the action to take in order to remove a root-kit (in Xaramin install directory - dydns.exe or something like that). After a few days of this pop-up (guessing the removal was unsuccessful), I went and manall deleted the file, and it hasn't come up since!

Step 2 - MBAM
I downloaded Malwarebytes, ran a quick scan as per instructed which did not detect any malicious items. The log is below:

Download RogueKiller for 32bit or Roguekiller for 64bit to your Desktop.
  • Close all the running programs
  • Windows Vista/7 users: right click on RogueKiller.exe, click Run as Administrator
  • Otherwise just double-click on RogueKiller.exe
  • Pre-scan will start. Let it finish.
  • Click on SCAN button.
  • Wait until the Status box shows Scan Finished
  • Click on Delete.
  • Wait until the Status box shows Deleting Finished.
  • Click on Report and copy/paste the content of the Notepad into your next reply.
  • RKreport.txt could also be found on your desktop.
  • If more than one log is produced post all logs.
  • If RogueKiller has been blocked, do not hesitate to try a few times more. If really won't run, rename it to winlogon.exe (or winlogon.com) and try again

Create new restore point before proceeding with the next step....
How to: http://www.smartestcomputing.us.com/topic/63983-how-to-create-new-restore-point-all-windows/

Download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit (MBAR) from HERE
  • Unzip downloaded file.
  • Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe
  • Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.
  • Click on the Cleanup button to remove any threats and reboot if prompted to do so.
  • Wait while the system shuts down and the cleanup process is performed.
  • Perform another scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit to verify that no threats remain. If they do, then click Cleanup once more and repeat the process.
  • When done, please post the two logs produced they will be in the MBAR folder..... mbar-log-xxxxx.txt and system-log.txt

Thanks again for the response! I will get these done ASAP :)

Also if it helps, the computer appears to hang for about 30 seconds after loading up the login screen. You are able to login and load up some applications (mainly non-windows ones such as firefox) during this time, but not any others. If they are run, they wont launch until suddenly after the time period ends.

Alex

I have performed the two tasks that you mentioned. Roguekiller found (5 I think) dodgy registry keys. It has placed a folder on my desktop called quarantine. I am just wondering if it should be left there or if it can be deleted! :)

Hope this is all ok! :)

It has placed a folder on my desktop called quarantine. I am just wondering if it should be left there or if it can be deleted!
You can delete it now.

Please download ComboFix from Here, Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  • Never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
  • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
  • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
If the connection is not there use restore point you created prior to running Combofix.
  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • NOTE1. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.
NOTE 2. If Combofix asks you to update the program, always do so.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt"
**Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
**Note 2 for AVG and CA Internet Security (Total Defense Internet Security) users: ComboFix will not run until AVG/CA Internet Security is uninstalled as a protective measure against the anti-virus. This is because AVG/CA Internet Security "falsely" detects ComboFix (or its embedded files) as a threat and may remove them resulting in the tool not working correctly which in turn can cause "unpredictable results". Since AVG/CA Internet Security cannot be effectively disabled before running ComboFix, the author recommends you to uninstall AVG/CA Internet Security first.
Use AppRemover to uninstall it: https://www.techspot.com/downloads/5514-appremover.html
We can reinstall it when we're done with CF.
**Note 3: If you receive an error Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion, restart computer to fix the issue.
**Note 4: Some infections may take some significant time to be cured. As long as your computer clock is running Combofix is still working. Be patient.

Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

NOTE.
If, for some reason, Combofix refuses to run, try the following...

Delete Combofix file, download fresh one, but rename combofix.exe to your_name.exe BEFORE saving it to your desktop.
Do NOT run it yet.
Download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

Restart computer in safe mode

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill.txt log.
NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

Once you've gotten one of them to run, immediately run your_name.exe by double clicking on it.

IF you had to run rKill post BOTH logs, rKill.txt and Combofix.txt.

That's good news! I posted in the windows OS section about the fact that if I do a Disk Cleanup, it would cause the computer to fail to start, and also if I did the same with a disk defrag (please see first post). I was referred to this forum by another user. Also, when starting up and logging in for the first time there is a delay before I can start certain programs such as IE and Windows mail but I can start Firefox straight away.

Pretty strange but it doesn't look like malware related.

It may be worth to...

Download Windows Repair (All in One) from this site

Install the program then run it.

NOTE 1. In Windows Vista, 7 and 8 right click on the program, click "Run As Administrator".
NOTE 2. Disable your antivirus program before running Windows Repair.

Go to Step 2 and click on Check button next to 1. See If Check Disk Is Needed.
If the tool that the Check Disk is needed click on Do It button next to 2. Check Disk.
In that case make sure you restart computer.

Once the above is done go to Step 3 and allow it to run System File Check by clicking on Do It button:

Go to Step 4 and under "System Restore" click on Create button:

Go to Start Repairs tab and click Start button.

Leave all checkmarks as they're.
NOTE for Windows 8 users. Reset Registry Permissions is NOT checked by design.

Click on Start button.

*Also I have to problem of when starting up, only a small number of programs will launch straight away, whereas other you have to wait around a minute before they will launch. The programs that don't launch straight away will have a process (task manager ca be launched straight away), but no window or evidence of being open. The ones in which you have to wait about a minute for tend to be the windows applications.

The initail issue with the defrag and cealnup has been resolved! Thank it appears to work just fine in that sense!

The only issue left is:
Also I have to problem of when starting up, only a small number of programs will launch straight away, whereas other you have to wait around a minute before they will open. The programs that don't launch straight away will have a process (task manager can be launched straight away), but no window or evidence of being open. The ones in which you have to wait about a minute for tend to be the windows applications. For example, I can run firefox the moment the desktop appears, and it comes up almost instantly. With IE, you run it, but it won't open util about a minute has passed!

Once again thank you for all your help :)

Well....

In this forum, we make sure, your computer is free of malware and your computer is clean :)
