Tesla's Cybertruck won't enter production until late 2022, Musk tells employees

What just happened? Tesla’s second-gen Roadster apparently isn’t the company’s only vehicle that could experience production delays. According to Electrek, Tesla chief Elon Musk recently held a company-wide call with employees to chat about the EV maker's future. Sources on the call told the publication that Musk said Tesla doesn’t expect the Cybertruck to enter production until the end of 2022.

Tesla in its most recent earnings call said the Cybertruck wouldn’t enter production until after the Model Y.

Tesla unveiled its radical Cybertruck in November 2019. The pickup, which looks unlike anything currently on the market, will be offered in single motor RWD, dual motor AWD and tri motor AWD configurations. The top-tier model will reportedly be able to hit 60 mph from a stop in under three seconds with a range of more than 500 miles per charge and a towing capacity of more than 14,000 pounds.

Bullet proof body panels are also in the mix, because of course they are.

Musk further noted that there is a lot of new technology destined for the truck, and that the production ramp-up would be very difficult. As such, volume production reportedly isn’t expected until late 2023.

The first models were expected to ship in 2021 starting at $39,900, but as we now know, that launch window was way off.

Not wanting to leave employees with a sour taste in their mouths, Musk reportedly described the Cybertruck as a special project. “Like a glitch in the Matrix. Like if Neo had a car.”

Tesla is still accepting orders for the Cybertruck. A deposit of $100 is all that's needed to secure your spot in line.

To me it's bizzare you have to pay upfront to be able to pay again to buy it, like it's some sort of a special privilege to buy a Tesla car, it's like a cult.

I'm a lot more impressed with Fords new mini-truck that will come out in 2022 ..... and the price, starting at just under $20K for the hybrid version is very, very tempting ..... oh yeah, I forgot to mention .... it looks like a truck!

There's a more succinct term in common usage for that paradigm, "high maintenance".

I'm a lot more impressed with Fords new mini-truck that will come out in 2022 ..... and the price, starting at just under $20K for the hybrid version is very, very tempting ..... oh yeah, I forgot to mention .... it looks like a truck!

I never expected american car brands to realise their pickups were just getting too big! I’m in Australia and the odd imported american F-250s etc stick out like a sore thumb because they are the size of an actual small truck!

To drive a Tesla is to not care about anyone, especially pedestrians. One's only thoughts must be concentrated on absolute loyalty to Elon Musk, and nothing else.

I think some of the tesla models are ok to be honest, the Model 3 seems like a reasonable option for a long commute. The top end teslas are just luxury status symbols and I have some serious questions about the utility of his prime mover, the cyber truck just wouldn’t practically work for me (I drive an Amarok and I find the tray sides etc of the cybertruck bizzare).

I’m in the UK and once saw an American pickup literally straddle the centre dividing line on a country road, as in Simpson’s Canyonero. The thing probably has the same horsepower and torque as something half the size as well.

Their big diesels particularly generally have massive torque, in the US they support a permissive licensing model of pulling huge trailers with their pickups, but at least in australia you will need a truck licence to do that which discourages many people. What you’ll find disappointing is that the load carrying capacity of the tray is often less than that of a hilux!

This thing will end up costing in the same price range as the electric Hummer. Tesla's investors are not going to let it come off the line for under $70,000.
