And then there's Class G, uncontrolled airspace, which is also either 700 or 1200' AGL However, it's illegal to fly a drone over 400' AGL. Which was more or less my point. You do need to receive FAA permission to fly a drone in classes A through F, but not in class G..FAA controlled airspace begins at various altitudes depending on the class of airspace.
- Class A Airspace: Starts at 18,000 feet above mean sea level (MSL) up to 60,000 feet.
- Class B Airspace: Extends from the surface up to 10,000 feet MSL, typically surrounding major airports.
- Class C Airspace: Begins at the surface and extends up to 4,000 feet above the airport elevation.
- Class D Airspace: Also starts at the surface and goes up to 2,500 feet above the airport elevation.
- Class E Airspace: Can begin at the surface or at 700 or 1,200 feet above ground level (AGL), depending on the specific area and its requirements.
Whether or not the FAA is radar observing airspace as low as 400', is a somewhat contentious guesstimate at best, but certainly they would be at levels D & E.
My post was aimed at part 107 drone operations, despite my 500' AGL error.
