Tesla's new Roadster can fly, drive upside down, and hit 60 mph in under 0.6 seconds

First look: Tesla has introduced a next-generation Roadster that it says can fly, with a single-seat Rocket configuration designed to lift off the ground and maneuver in the air. The Rocket is the most ambitious of three versions, with a claimed zero-to-60 mph time below 0.59 seconds. The engineering pushes the Roadster beyond conventional sports-car performance, though it remains unclear whether owners will be allowed to use its full capabilities.

The Rocket configuration places thrusters around the car's perimeter to provide forward and upward acceleration as well as lateral rotation. All-electric actuators make small adjustments to stabilize the vehicle in flight.

Tesla demonstrated airborne maneuvers Thursday night outside Waco, Texas, near SpaceX's McGregor site. The Roadster climbed a curved ramp until it was upside down, then launched off, flipped and landed on the pavement. It also hovered over a moving lineup that included a Cybercab, Cybertruck, Tesla Semi, Model Y and Model 3.

"Well, it worked," Elon Musk said. "Flying cars are real."

Musk described the car as a collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX engineers. He said, "This will be the actual car that's on the roads," although Tesla has stated that the Roadster is not approved for public road use. Rocket will be available by invitation only and will not be offered in every region.

The Roadster uses a separate fan system to stay attached to a surface. Together with a ground seal, the fans pull air from beneath the car to create suction. Tesla says that suction can hold the vehicle upside down even when it is stopped, unlike aerodynamic features that rely on the car's movement. The car also has active wings and a Track Mode that lowers its ride height.

That system appears in the two-seat Performance configuration, which Tesla lists with a zero-to-60 mph time under 1.6 seconds. Performance will be available through reservations.

The two-seat Thrust version adds rear-mounted cold gas thrusters and lowers the claimed acceleration time to under 0.9 seconds. Tesla describes it as race-ready and plans a limited release.

Rocket removes the second seat and uses the perimeter-mounted thrusters for its broader range of movement. Its published acceleration time is considerably shorter than the one-second zero-to-60 mph run Tesla showed during the demonstration. Tesla also lists a top speed over 230 mph and a range over 300 miles.

Tesla says it cut weight with magnesium, titanium, carbon fiber, manual controls and a fixed seat position. The cabin has a steer-by-wire yoke, a center touchscreen and two smaller displays in front of the driver.

The exterior has hidden headlights, a full-length taillight and Ano White paint inspired by aerospace coatings. Gold-tinted glass is modeled on spacesuit visors. Inside, Tesla pairs an Ultrawhite interior with gray microsuede.

Tesla has reopened reservations requiring a $50,000 deposit but has not revealed vehicle pricing. Production is planned for Giga Texas in 2027 or 2028. Musk has said manufacturing would begin 12 to 18 months after the demonstration.

Musk has called the Roadster "the best of the last of the human-driven cars," while acknowledging that he is "not sure it moves the needle massively from a revenue standpoint." He has also warned that buyers whose top priority is safety should not purchase it.

There is no way in Hell that thing will EVER be street legal in that form.

First of all, the government controls the air above you so you're not flying anything short of having a pilot's license. In the United States, single-seat ultralight aircraft that weigh under 254 pounds and meet specific Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) rules under Part 103 do not require a pilot's license, medical exam, or aircraft registration. The car weights more than that (obviously).

No Highway will ever allow you to do SCREW ATTACKS through traffic.

Whichever country allows this on the public road (if any) is seriously lacking in safety regulations.
Not even a car for the 1%, but for the 0.0000001% if even that (that's about 8 people).

If I was Elon I'd try to sell them to Dubai as police cars. Only people crazy enough to consider it imo.

Doubt this is actually “real”

What is "real" is the interest free loan people gave Musk in 2019.

Imagine handing him $100,000 - $200,000

I could have rolled that money into millions of dollars during COVID.

Buying Nvidia alone would have put you up over 3000% returns. Same for Micron.

Now he's saying: "2028".

That vehicle will never be sold legally in that format.

The vehicle that will never exist in the format. Any demo video they publish is more than likely fake or staged. Would imagine the reason for the blacked out windows is that the entire internal volume of the car would have the be tanks

All I can say is reserve one at your own peril. Tesla might hold on to your deposit for 50yrs before buyers ever see a production model. Tesla really screwed the early roadster buyers by holding on to their money for 8yrs before they ever came close delivering.

Provided that they can even remotely get this production ready. What happens if you let this thing loose in an environment with other vehicles including bicycles, street furniture, buildings, bystanders, power lines... ? "Pedestrian crushed between garbage bin and wall when roadster activated booster" and "Toddler killed by blast of roadster flying over his head" are not the headlines that authorities want to see.

Smoke and mirrors. And the launch of something real drivable is now postponed to (at least) somewhere in 2028.

Well: the EV only version that kinda looks like a Lamborghini will probably make production.

But that rocket thruster stuff ain't ever happening. And it damn sure ain't happening on our roads.

Flying cars will only be allowed once EVERY car on the road (and above it) are self-driving. We can barely trust adults to drive in the current system - imagine the chaos of allowing “regular people” to drive in the air…

Unless Musk is interested on a new Knight Rider TV show this car capabilities are useless for real life applications....

it doesn't fly it uses propulsion with a very limited rage and it can soft land....it's perfect for a new K.I.T.T

Instead of focusing on delivering the vehicle he has been promising for at least a decade Musk focuses on silly pointless stunts using a prototype car that will never be legally driven by anyone. Totally on brand.

PS. - If you think a street legal version of this will be produced in 2028 then keep on dreaming.

Another swastika on wheels.
Seems like a different kind of stupid than the Cyber truck, but still stupid and possibly more dangerous.
