The Ryzen 7 5800X3D Revisited, Four Years Later

AMD got so much right with AM4 and especially this CPU. Bought mine in 2022 and I am still using it in my gaming PC today. System's seen several GPU swaps over the years from the 5700XT to 6950XT to current 9070XT - but the CPU, Motherboard and (especially today) the 64GB of RAM I went for all remain.

Was a smart purchase back then and a value we'll never likely see again. AMD's own "4790K" moment for sure.

I think it really depends on what you have already.. If you have an 5800X3D or 5700X3D, and don't want to spend a bunch of money, stick to what you have. And how good is the 5700X3D ! It was still available for a whilst the 5800X3D was long gone..

But if you don't have a X3D processor, it seems there can be significant gains by upgrading to one if you want to spend a bit of money. Finding a 5x00X3D could however be quite expensive, in which case it probably makes sense to just go straight to a 9800X3D for about the same price. DDR5 is stupidly expensive, and yes, and you'll be paying at least 100% more than a few months ago, but it is still obtainable - at least in my country. But the gains are still significant of upgrading to AM5.
 
I just wanted a 5950x3D. I wouldnt want to spend 700 since thats what id expect from a new generation release but 399 seems about right for a piece of mass produced silicon
 
I'll ride by B550-F, 5700x3d, 32GB, and 5070 12GB into 2030 if I must. I only game in 1440p and very happy.

I just wish I had grabbed a 2nd 5700x3d back on 11/22/24 when I got mine for $199 from Amazon, not that I truly needed two. I had just hoped AMD would have produced them for a little longer.

My 2nd system is a B550-F running my original AM4 CPU the 1600x and that chip still gets some action w 32GB DDR4-3200 and an old 2060S.

I would have loved to upgrade the 2nd system with another x3d chip.. idk if I'll ever upgrade that 1600x, not even sure what would be best. I mostly use that machine for a few games in 1080p and more so lately running RPCS3 for PS3 emulators.

Most of the PS3 games play 100% on the 2nd older system, just amazed at how far emulation has come. I like dedicating that system for older games and the PS2 & PS3 emulators have given me more games I don't have time for lol.
 
Hehe, you killed all that "Zen3_X3D == 7500F" crap. So GN were right all the time when made those graphics where entire X3D lineup nailed every game by far. To my shame, I though they were excel benching...

And what are you ppl talking about 4790K moment?? It was ordinary cpu, worse than 6700K, it was not 8700K moment and definitely not 2600K moment, IVR issues, etc. Moreover, I had one back in 2014, and it seriously lack horsepower to nitro 1080Ti in BF1

Maybe 5775C and 5765C are more appropriate Intel X3D cpu's?

P.S. Zen arch itself has a lot of potential - I still remember that jaw-DROPPING boost in Deus Ex: MD when I swapped 8700K for 5800X. You can try out 3 or 4 CPU generations in that one particular game, something in their code seriously gimped pre-2019 CPU's performance.

I actually made the decision recently to upgrade my 2019 am4 PC instead of moving to am5. I did bite the bullet and bought a 5700X3D for £325. However, I think my system now will easily get me going for 5 years and it makes even more sense if you play at 1440p where it's mostly the GPU that makes the difference. I think I would need quote a lot more money to achieve very similar performance with am5.

I had a Ryzen 7 2700, 5700xt and 16gb ddr4 3200, 1TB m.2 nvme SSD, ASUS ROG STRIX X470-F Gaming motherboard, DeepCool Gammaxx 400 CPU cooler, ACER Nitro VG270UPbmiipx — 27", 1440p 144 Hz monitor and an old almost 12 year old PC case :))).

I made the below upgrades and kept the rest for a total of £1153.

Intels “Devils Canyon” processors at the time were untouchable for gaming performance next to the way more costly HEDT Xeon derived platforms of the era.

The 4790K especially was held in high regard because they could overclock easily (the CPU had major design changes over the 4770K to allow this). My one held 4.8 GHZ all core for 6 years without putting a foot wrong as did many others helping to boost their usefulness across multiple generations at an attractive price - just like the 5800X3D is doing today (current price silliness on eBay excluded).

The fact the 4790K was also faster than the replacement 5775C, 6700K and 7700K parts in most games while being cheaper further added to their appeal for years at the time. Gamers flocked to this CPU as it had no issue keeping up with SLI 980’s and the equally legendary GTX 1080 Ti of the era as the CPUs price landed firmly in the sweet spot back then. Spending more for the newer 6 and 7th gen didn’t make any sense.

The 7500F is around 5% slower than the 7600, and the 7600 is around 5% slower than the 9600X. They're all in the same ballpark, and you couldn't tell them apart in a blind test. Exactly like the 5800X3D, 5700X3D and 5600X3D.

Saying Zen 3 X3D = 7500F is perfectly reasonable.
 
Still going strong with my 5800x3D, with PBO -30 across all cores.

I'm just annoyed that I didn't pick up a 5700x3D for my kids computer when they were £179, at least that's got a second hand 5600x so it's doing alright.

Looks like I'm going to end up skipping a few generations of AM5 CPU at this rate!
 
This is kind of pointless, why are we comparing a 4 year old cpu and still running 1080p with medium settings. Like are we purposely trying to go back in time fully? This is not an ideal use case in 2026

1080p is often used to gauge how well a CPU can supply data to the graphics card. Faster CPUs with better IPC and/or memory bandwidth can feed a card like the 5090 with all the FPS it can handle.

On the other hand, gaming at 4K with High/Ultra settings is a great CPU equalizer, since the graphics card usually becomes the limiting factor for FPS. In this case, the CPU often idles on most of its cores in a cycle constantly, waiting for the GPU to catch up and request more data.

Benchmark data shows that at 4K, using Cyberpunk as an example, high-end CPUs from multiple generations tend to cluster together, with only a few FPS separating them which is why 4K doesn't really show the raw power of a given CPU.
 
Glad I bought 5700X3D for £160 in November 2024.

Had the same B350 mobo since 2017!

AM4 is the gift that keeps on giving.
 
I think you guys need to mention if the Core Isolation features like Memory Integrity and Stack Protection are enabled. That can hurt performance a bit in some cases.
 
Got my 5800X3D at the end of 2022 for around $300 upgraded from a 3900X it's mind blowing 4 years later that it's still up in the top handful of best gaming CPUs. I don't think any other CPU can currently say that. On top of that, it's perfectly happy with some mediocre DDR4 3600 C18. GOAT is an understatement!

People will say this until the end of time. It isn't pointless, it's just the best way to compare CPU performance because at higher resolutions the system will usually be GPU bound. There are still benefits at higher resolutions but it's harder to get a baseline comparison. Make sense?
