Trump's 125% tariffs hit Chinese Amazon sellers hard, forcing them to raise prices or quit the US

Why it matters: Although President Trump has implemented a 90-day pause on his latest tariffs, China has been hit even harder, with duties on items it exports to the US reaching 125%. This is expected to have a significant impact on Chinese companies that sell products on Amazon, forcing them to either raise their prices for American consumers or exit the market entirely.

After Trump raised tariffs on Chinese imports to 125% up from the current 104%, Wang Xin, the head of the Shenzhen Cross-Border E-Commerce Association, which represents more than 3,000 Amazon sellers, told Reuters that the tariffs weren't just a tax issue; they were overwhelming the entire cost structure.

She warned that most sellers would find surviving the US market very difficult. The only options were to raise prices in the country or leave to find new markets.

Five Shenzhen-based Amazon sellers who spoke to the publication agreed with Wang's assessment. Three said they would raise prices for their exports to the US, while two said they were planning to leave the market entirely.

One seller said he had raised prices in the US by up to 30%. He also plans to let his inventory levels fall and lower spending on Amazon advertising fees, which once took up 40% of his US revenue.

"We have to reduce investment, and put more resources into regions like Europe, Canada, Mexico and the rest of the world," he said.

Another seller said that maintaining his margins might require prices for higher-cost items to be raised by 50%.

Over half of Amazon's sellers are based in China, with more than 100,000 registered in Shenzhen, aka the Silicon Valley of China. They generate annual revenues of $35.3 billion, according to estimates.

According to China's State Council, the country's imports and exports involving cross-border e-commerce were worth $358 billion last year.

Wang also warned that the tariffs could lead to a rapid increase in China's unemployment rate.

It's not just Amazon's Chinese sellers being affect by Trump's actions. Popular platforms Shein and Temu, known for selling virtually everything at low prices, will feel the impact of the de minimis exemption ending at midnight on May 1.

The de minimis exemption allows items valued at under $800 to be imported without facing added extra duties. After it ends, these shipments sent through the international postal network will be subject to a duty rate of 90% of their value or $75 (rising to $150 after June 1) per item.

Some rival American companies have welcomed the end of de minimis. Forever 21, which is winding down its US operations, attributed its decline to companies leveraging duty-free exemptions on low-cost Chinese imports to gain a pricing advantage.

Every country in the world will be affected by the Trump nonsensical plans as U.S companies will justify their expenses and losses on other countries in order to compensate for the imposed Tariffs...Apple being the biggest offender of all.

Didn't Trump raise the tarrifs because China keeps raising retaliation tarrifs. Which is not mentioned in the article.
Also yesterday on CNN Kevin O'Leary was pushing for 400% tarrifs on China.

Trump based his tariffs on the trade deficit - which is pretty stupid to begin with. China responded - Trump got mad, he increased again. China responded, Trump got mad - and so it goes

Dropping everyone else’s tariffs to 10% for 90 days even temporarily while keeping China’s high is f*cking GENIUS. Watch how many companies either flee China or flat out refuse to start there now. And what are they going to do to retaliate? Mass manufacturing of cheap sh!t (and global pandemics) is ALL China has. Trump just made Chinese Sweatshops highly unviable in the span of days, and maybe even triggered a recession for the Chinese while potentially boosting their neighbors’ economies. I like that a lot better for currying favor than throwing away billions of taxpayer dollars on an ultra-corrupt USAID, which turned out to be money laundering scheme for dimocrats anyways!

Bravo Orange man, Bravo. The haters will be seething as usual, but who cares? The haters are practically China-stans at this point 🤣. They’re only happy when our junk is made in CHYNA! CHYNA!

But sure, its the businessman who's simply trying to level the playing field who's the bad guy.

Looks like your Kool-Aid is running low, let me get you another glass

Good that China is fighting against this American dictator and bully. I hope the Europe also breaks away from depending on the USA. It's about time.

Everything the US does, is for its own benefit. Invading Iraq for the yet-unfound WMD, for example. Actually, it's all for the oil. Myanmar also facing persecution from its own ruthless military regime, but the superhero USA is not interested in "saving the people" since there's no oil in Myanmar to benefit American companies. And natural Jade - the americans are not interested.

I hope to see China bankrupt and starving

China can survive not exporting to the US without any issues whatsoever. Sure, they would lose lots of revenue and jobs but they have 100% control over their population… so that’s that.

China can also close Apple’s Foxconn operations overnight. Bye-bye Apple! And this is one of the many, many tech companies China can literally close the curtains on. Bye-bye America’s most valuable companies and their handsome services, billions upon billions (295 billion in 2024) surplus they bring to the US Goods and Services Trade balance year after year, for a couple of decades already.

Meanwhile maga America is flailing. Alone. It is what they wanted, no?

I’m pretty confident Canada won’t jump alongside the US this time around. Most likely none of the Western countries will join up either.

Let the Two Big Dinosaurs fight it off. They both deserve to be knocked down a few notches.

It's about time ASEAN deal with China and forget about dealing with usa, and Europe break away from us of a. Asean and China with Japan and Korea is a bigger and fruitful collaboration rather than everyone depending on usa. This is a lesson to be learnt from this trump bully.

As usual, we don't need a single guy (and country) dictating how the rest of the world do business.

So China isn't a dictatorship anymore? Are you just taking any position against Trump? China can wait this out. Trump has until the midterms. 🙄. Ah a termed dictatorship voted via democracy can be scary vs a full blown one. makes sense.

Temper Tantrums affecting global trade, yep - that’s where we are atm.
Yeah, as a European citizen, I am horrified that there is no resistance to Trump in the US. As a European I also remember what happened to a certain dictator in Europe who was executed in Romania, together with his wife in 1989.
Karma or no?

sure they could, but they wont because if they let China in, China now owns them, and China opposes everything about democracy, freedom, and decency.

China has been ripping us off for decades with their slave labor. This is long overdue.
It’s open market - if you jump off that market, the result will be expensive goods in the US - cheaper goods everywhere else. The USA isn’t equipped to produce even a third of what you import from China, so you’re in for a tough period going forward
