VIA Technologies has unveiled its new family of low power dual-core VIA Nano X2 series processors at the Embedded System Conference held recently in San Jose, CA. Available in 1.2GHz and 1.6GHz models, the new Nano X2 E-Series processors combine what Via claims is a highly optimized, power-efficient dual-core architecture with advanced performance for the most demanding x86 embedded system design applications.
Built using a 40nm manufacturing process the chips are said to offer enhanced multi-tasking and superb multimedia performance on a low power budget. As you'd expect these are not meant for use in netbooks or tablet computers, but rather televisions, set-top-boxes, point-of-sales systems, and other commercial environments.
Among its features are the VIA VT virtualization technology, which allows legacy software and applications to be used in virtual scenarios without impacting on performance, and VIA's AES Security Engine for hardware-based data encryption on the fly, an essential tool in content protection and system security.
Via says the Nano X2 E-Series is pin-to-pin compatible with VIA Eden, Eden X2, C7, and VIA Nano E-Series chips to simplify upgrades, and supports Windows Embedded Standard 7, Windows CE, and Linux. The company is sampling the new chips to customers right now, and expects systems using the Nano X2 E-Series to ship in Q2 2011.
