Virus removal in safe mode?

Hi
My son has a virus on his PC (xp) that has stopped windows from booting up normally, it seems to be on a loop and just returns to the 1st page very time. I cannot get to restore in safe mode
I can open with safe/networking mode. Will scannow sfc solve the problem ?
Can anybody tell me to get windows to boot normally & is it worth running virus/malware etc removal software in safe mode ?.

Yes you can run Antivirus and Antimalware in Safe Mode. Even preferable in some cases.
