Volkswagen overtakes Tesla in European EV sales for the first time

Bottom line: Europe's electric vehicle landscape shifted decisively in 2025 as Volkswagen overtook Tesla for the first time in regional battery-electric car sales. The data, compiled by automotive analytics group JATO Dynamics, captures a pivotal year when old and new manufacturers reversed roles in the race to electrify Europe's roads.

Tesla has dominated the continent's fully electric segment for years, but its momentum faltered sharply in 2025. JATO's figures show Tesla's registrations plunged 27 percent compared to 2024. Volkswagen filled that gap with a 56 percent jump, largely driven by its new ID.7 sedan. The result: VW's European battery-electric sales reached 274,278 units, overtaking Tesla's 236,357.

The numbers tell a broader story of transformation in Europe's auto market. Fully electric vehicles surged 29 percent in registrations last year, while overall car sales barely grew – just 2.3 percent across 28 European nations, including Britain, Norway, and Switzerland. EVs now command nearly a fifth of all new cars sold in Europe, evidence that electrification is becoming the continent's dominant technology rather than a niche.

Volkswagen's lead extends beyond its own brand. The company's broader portfolio – spanning Audi, Skoda, Cupra, and Porsche – collectively reinforces its EV footprint. Audi logged over 150,000 units, Skoda exceeded 170,000, and Cupra and Porsche together added well over 100,000 more. This depth gave Volkswagen Group a commanding position as the European market shifted toward zero-emission vehicles.

However, Tesla's troubles go beyond competition. Its limited model lineup – the Model Y and Model 3 – has begun to feel dated in a market increasingly defined by variety and regional customization. The Model Y remained Europe's most-registered single vehicle with roughly 150,000 units, yet that figure was still 28 percent lower than the year before. The Model 3 declined 24 percent to around 85,000.

Meanwhile, other automakers faced their own ups and downs. Volvo's small EX30, once expected to be a breakout success, slumped 37 percent after production shifts and recall issues stemming from geopolitical trade pressures. Still, smaller setbacks like these could not obscure the bigger picture: more than two-thirds of Europe's new cars last year came with some form of electrification – whether full battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, or mild hybrid systems using 48-volt starter motors to cut emissions modestly.

That technological diversity underscores the maturity of Europe's EV market. Battery-electric adoption accelerated, but mild hybrids – still powered primarily by internal combustion engines – remained the top-selling form of electrified vehicle, with nearly three million sold.

Plug-in hybrid models also posted robust 34 percent growth to more than 1.2 million units. By contrast, sales of unelectrified cars dropped 20 percent to just 4.5 million, marking a historic retreat for gasoline- and diesel-powered cars.

For Tesla, Europe's downturn mirrors a broader challenge. The company already lost its title as the world's largest EV manufacturer to China's BYD in 2024. That setback, combined with slowing demand growth in mature markets, heightens pressure on Elon Musk's company to refresh its lineup and remain competitive against an increasingly skilled global field.

Volkswagen, on the other hand, appears to be capitalizing on stability, scale, and renewed credibility nearly a decade after its diesel emissions scandal. Its strong European performance suggests that legacy automakers – armed with deep manufacturing roots and improving battery technology – are ready to contest the next phase of the EV era on equal footing.

So....when is VW gonna start selling these things here? Their gas models are not doing very well and they need SOMETHING to grab peoples attention.
Well, They are kinda slowly leaving US market. Unpredictable tariffs, while US manufacturing havn't really started yet (like, never will). Call It art of the deal.

Started? VW has made crossovers in the US for almost 2 decades now.

Perhaps if they stopped treated the US market as a second class citizen and gave us the same quality and upgrades they gave Europe they'd have a stronger market here. We STILL dont have the twin injection cylinder heads that they developed 10 years ago to fix the carbon buildup issues, or the updated main bearings to fix the EA888's failure issue. We never got their hybrid or PHEV powertrains that were praised in Europe, even as hybrid sales took off stateside. I could go on.

Oh, and parts! VW euro still sell sparts for things they made in the 60s. VW USA cant source parts for stuff from 2014 anymore.

Being a VW enthusiast can be so exhausting at times.....

I meant US manufacturing that Donald Trump promised. Like components that are now manufactured globally, with huge percentage in China. You cannot run a business today, if You don't know the rules tomorrow. Taxes made on a whim and scrapped next day will not cut it for a billion $ planning. Those corpos have to wait this administration out.

VWs problems in the US market started under Obama. They're not new. Tariffs are just the latest roadblock that they seem unable to deal with.

This article shows VW in a good light, but at the same time VW euro is struggling too, thats why german workers were getting laid off. The whole of VAG is in serious trouble, VW, audi, porsche, they're bleeding bad.

ALL manufacturers today suffer from disease called "corporate greed". They were bought out by private equity and now have to prove qurterly improvements and buy out Their stock rather than improve Their product. "Green taxes" is just an excuse. They charge more and more while Their client base shrinks. That's why Chinese has such a great field day with Them. Personally I wouldn't buy chinese, but today I would probably wouldn't buy a brand that I considered dream buy 2 decades ago. Even Toyota dropped the ball, I read.

Tesla and Honda show that automakers can source a majority of their vehicle components in the USA on a brand level. And an increasing majority of electric vehicles in the top 20 most American-made vehicles show that automakers respond to incentives to produce vehicles domestically: https://www.cars.com/american-made-index/

Is it really fair to compare a traditional car company to a robotics company for EV sales? The media these days always looking for a way to put Musk down.
Here we go, Trump/Musk supporters to the rescue! How dare anyone criticize Musk! It seems all the people who support Trump feel exactly the same about Musk too. There should only be positive news about Musk/Trump, anything negative is just the media looking to put them down. You people deserve a full frontal lobotomy.

Why would any foreign company want to sell anything in America now? There's no stability there, the thing that companies value the most. It's an unpredictable climate where you don't know which day you'll be slapped with ridiculous tariffs, suddenly get threatened with demands, bullied to do what the Orange Turd wants, etc.

The people who voted for the turd all live in a fantasy world where they think everything is better now. All the jobs are coming back, the economy is booming, when in fact the opposite is happening. Many companies are pulling out and taking their business elsewhere.

When you wrote that last line, did you feel powerful? Accomplished? Like you had promoted Tolerance and Acceptance?

Perhaps if hypocritical ad hominem screaming matches hadn't been levied for years, people would be a little more open to criticism? Just a thought.

I dont disagree, but VWs problems were caused by their own mismanagement and apparently forgetting the audience that made them who they are. Sucks, because their cars drive great, but they have 0 interest in producing anything but grey CUVs anymore.

I went to the car show in m city a few weeks ago, all that was there were beige jellybeans. Maybe one red car out of everything there.

After BYD overtook it globally, the US brand faces another blow in its most competitive region

Tesla is finished... History... Memory...!

This is the purest Trump Derangement Syndrome I've seen here in awhile, and that is impressive given the competition.

The US represents a quarter of global consumer spending. Companies are not in the habit of torpedoing multi billion dollar decades long investments over one divisive president. Especially when we are talking about CARS. The US LOVES cars, and they love credit, credit often given by those same auto makers, which they can then use to buy higher trim (read, higher margin) cars and pay interest on their payments to those same automakers. We are the single most profitable car market on the planet, and VW develops models specifically for the US market. The Atlas and Atlas cross sport are US only, as is the jetta GLI, and the tiguan received heavy updates specifically to appeal to US consumers, not EU ones, much to the annoyance of EU reviewers.
LOL! So predictable. Everything is the fault of Obama/Biden/Clinton. No point even talking to you about anything, you always have an answer that circles back to those three. Actually, should probably throw Soros and CNN in there too.
Diesel-gate did a massive number on VW's finances. It not only cost them a massive sum of money, but the resulting cuts cost them much of their best engineering talent. Despite Mercedes and Chrysler committing far worse violations, one was an "American" company (really Italian but since when could politicians figure that out) and the other was a luxury brand that higher ups loved, so VW got smacked extra hard to make an example out of them. They finally started to recover in 2019, only for Red Lung to smack them in the face with a 9 iron.

This was in 2015. Now, who was president in 2015? Whose appointees were in the courts and the EPA leveraging these charges.....Was it Trump? Bush? Ford?

No, it was Obama. He had been president for 7 years by that point.

Now there's lots of nuance to the conversation. One could easily argue that VW didnt get hit hard enough, that the other companies were let off way too hard, or VW was hit too hard and the punitive actions were emotionally driven and counter productive. However, it is OBJECTIVELY FACTUAL to say "VW's problems started under Obama, not Trump", and disagreeing with that is disagreeing with reality itself.

It's on par with crying about Biden's money printing after Trump printed $6 trillion in just a few months. Hopefully you can regain your sense of rationality and make actual arguments next time instead of becoming a histrionic mess and making a fool out of yourself.
There's a stigma associated with Tesla in Europe now. People who have them are constantly saying things like 'I bought it before we found out he was a fascist nutjob' and 'I got it before he teamed up with Trump and started doge'.
You see a lot of those here. What's REALLY funny is when they trade in their car to "escape the fascists" and buy a Volkswagen, or a BMW, or a Mazda, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, or Subaru, or a Ford, or a Chevy. Historical context really does show how hypocritical most of these virtue signalers are.

Is that really funny? No. Germany and Japan are trying to escape their fascist past. Elon would love to usher in a new one. I know you will defend Trump and Musk and the entire cabal of crazies no matter what I say, so replying is slightly pointless but hey ho you have to try to get through. Unfortunately magas are denser than black holes so it's a futile exercise but it's still fun to point out the glaringly obvious to you window lickers now and then.

I'm sure the safety ratings might have something to do with it, and, the fact that EV sales in the USA kind of slowed down. Most that wanted an EV, already have one. If the PRICE of these things were lower, perhaps more people might buy one.
In America, most people consider RANGE as the major consideration. That and lack of charging stations.
In Europe, you can drive across Germany in a day. The land area in Germany is about the size of California. Texas for example is 100,000 sq miles larger and that's just two of the states.

Yeah, it's really convenient to promise for years that you're gonna sell twice as many cars as the biggest carmaker in history (Toyota), and constantly ridicule "legacy auto" for selling fewer EVs than you, the 100% electric carmaker...

... and when the sales slump, pretend that you're suddenly not a carmaker anymore, but a "robotics" company, with zero "robotics" products to buy, only a half-arsed "demo" to show, with human operated, remote controlled arms on a metal skeleton.

Yeah right, "robotics company". With 6 car making plants. There's only one joke worse than Musk himself - his fans.

This article shows VW in a good light, but at the same time VW euro is struggling too, thats why german workers were getting laid off. The whole of VAG is in serious trouble, VW, audi, porsche, they're bleeding bad.

Turn off your reality distortion field.

- VWAG (I.e. VW, Audi, Porsche, Skoda, etc. all included) 2025 global sales: -0.5%
- VWAG 2025 global BEV sales: +32%

"Bleeding" by increasing BEV production by one third, gotcha.

Meanwhile:
- Tesla 2024 sales: -1%
- Tesla 2025 sales: -8.6%

So not only are Tesla sales declining, they decline at an accelerating rate.

So....when is VW gonna start selling these things here? Their gas models are not doing very well and they need SOMETHING to grab peoples attention.
Maybe, just maybe, they don't really care about the US anymore? It's a distant third in the EV race, and growth potential is in the EV field, not in legacy cars.

The US can indulge themselves in their precious 3 tonne 3 liter V8 trucks, while the rest of the world moves on. Apparently that's how they want it, now they got it.

Unless they're killed off by cheap Chinese imports via Canada, that is. Oops. Maybe you should've treated your friends fairly?

Btw. Trump also said he's fine with Chinese car companies selling their cars in the US, as long as they build them there. So... they most definitely will. RIP US carmakers.

So yeah, Trump is really great at killing domestic production, isn't he? What a genius this guy is, love him. The greatest president ever, no one's better at making deals than him, etc.

How many MAGAs you see burning down Prius dealerships?
