Hi,

940MHz P3,
256MB RAM
60gig HDD

When I boot up, it will take an AGE at the scrolling blue bar section...and safe mode reveals this to be MUP.SYS. OK, problem one.

Problem two - when I disconnect power entirely (ie. pull out the plug) and then power up, it's grand. But if I reset, or power off by holding the switch down, it restarts...but with no video and no beep.

It was running perfectly for months up to now, I suspect a dud HDD and possible lack of power?

It could well be a cheap powersupply. You'll need a good quality PSU of minimum 300W for your setup, 400 is better.
Borrow another PSU from someone to try it out.
You could also have bad capacitors on your mobo. Look at the round thingies standing up, located around the CPU. If they have a crust or goo on them, that could be your problem also.
