windows xp freezes, HELP pls

When I strart up my computer, windows xp freezes. Nothing happened no matter what I click. When I point the mouse to the ICON tray, I can see the busy time ICON. (not the arrow you see when you move your mouse).
This happened first in March, then I reformatt and reinstall everything. Everything was ok for one month, and in APril this happened again.
Then I reformatted again, everything again was ok for a month, and same thing happened, and I have to reinstall windows xp again in May.
And now in June, same thing happened again. What can I do to solve this problem?
Is this virus?

Have you installed anti-spyware software like spybot and adaware? It's possible you're getting so loaded up with spyware that your system is slowing to a crawl.
