First the mouse pointer locks us, then the whole thing just freezes and I have to reboot holdiong the power button in for a few seconds. This is driving me crazy! Any advice?

SONY VAIO, Intel PIII, 2-256 RAM sticks, 866Mhz, Windows ME OS

Does this happen after the machine has been on some time? If you are running ME on a PIII the machine must be a few years old - try cleaning out the fluff bunnies in the CPU heatsink (careful use of a vacuum machine and small paintbrush) in case it is overheating.

It might be a fan failure - or if not that then the boot sector on the hard drive is corrupted. Check the cooling first, then if that is OK boot from a bootable ME floppy disk, change to drive C: and run chkdsk /f [enter] to check the hard drive for errors.
