Forward-looking: Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has articulated his ambitions for artificial intelligence in a sweeping blog post, calling for a future where personal superintelligence becomes a driving force for individual empowerment instead of widespread job automation.

In the post, published ahead of Meta's second-quarter earnings report, Zuckerberg outlined his vision for AI's next frontier, suggesting that the path ahead could help people "achieve your goals, create what you want to see in the world, be a better friend and grow to become the person that you aspire to be."

He contrasted Meta's strategy with that of other technology companies, emphasizing that, unlike some industry peers who envision superintelligence as a means to automate work on a large scale and allocate its benefits collectively, Meta aims to use the technology to support individual empowerment and personal agency.

While the letter offered few specifics on upcoming products, it highlighted Meta's recent acceleration in the AI race. In June, the company committed $14.3 billion to an investment in Scale AI and hired Scale's CEO, Alexandr Wang, who will lead the newly formed Meta Superintelligence Labs as chief AI officer. The company has also drawn engineers and researchers from leading rivals, including OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.

Zuckerberg's announcement arrives at a pivotal moment for the social media giant, as the company seeks to win mindshare – and market share – in the increasingly competitive world of advanced AI. Notably, he stressed the company's commitment to "building personal superintelligence for everyone," describing Meta as uniquely resourced "to build the massive infrastructure required and the ability to deliver new technology to billions of people."

Meta's push reflects rising use of AI for personal endeavors. According to a survey from Elon University, over half of respondents reported using AI chatbots for personal rather than work-related tasks, foreshadowing a potential shift in how people interact with technology.

Zuckerberg acknowledged the immense cost and responsibility inherent in this transformation. He predicted the push toward superintelligence could cost Meta "hundreds of billions of dollars." He also pointed to possible new safety challenges and the importance of rigorous risk mitigation, while maintaining that "building a free society requires that we aim to empower people as much as possible."

Comparisons to Meta's efforts building the metaverse, a project that generated significant losses in its Reality Labs division, are inevitable. Despite the challenges, Zuckerberg remains confident about the future, suggesting that if current trends persist, people will likely shift away from traditional productivity tools in favor of activities focused on creativity and connection. He believes that personal superintelligence – capable of understanding individuals and supporting their goals – will ultimately prove most valuable.

Looking forward, Zuckerberg emphasized the significance of the coming years: "The rest of this decade seems likely to be the decisive period for determining the path this technology will take, and whether superintelligence will be a tool for personal empowerment or a force focused on replacing large swaths of society."

We would all be free if it wasn’t for psychopaths like Zuckerberg, Gates, Finks, etc. The solution is actually to get rid of the 1% so that the 99% can live free. Instead, they want to enslave the 99% so that the 1% can live “free.” Twisted technocratic psychopaths are wired that way, and it’s nearly on full display.

While I agree with him, I think that this is just propaganda so he can keep getting approved for permits from local governments to build massive data centers and consume tons of water and electricity.

As an Android, I’m certain Zuckerberg greatly benefits from AI when it comes to simulating human emotions - thus the personal empowerment perspective

Perhaps you should just move to a communist country and see how you get on.

There was a time when we believed, foolishly no doubt, the tech giants' proclamations on liberty and all that---those halcyon days of "Don't be evil"---but time has proved where their interests lie, and we've become immune to their hogwash coated in honey.

All they're doing is securing their place in the "free society" of the high, the middle, and the proletariat, using, as Orwell noted, their talk of brotherhood and freedom to scale the ladder.

Why wait? With the ID system the UK has implemented, the same system coming to EU countries, the newest UK bill that will allow anything said to be made illegal depending on the receiver's context (aka, I'm offended by literally anything) and the US following in their footsteps with google's new age system being implemented, you already live in one!

Instead of social credit score, we'll just call it "respect orders"!

How will they achieve super intelligence?
AI right now is super interesting, at points, during deep conversations, is not different than talking to a human. But how will they achieve super intelligence with how LLM work right now? Are patterns, attention, and numerical knobs the way ?

They will create it with actual technology?
Of course they pour an insane amount of capital since they almost earned it for free with only having to prepare buckets to catch the cash falling.

Zuckerberg claims his A$$ can blast him into space.

Uh huh. Another clueless billionaire just trying to convince people to add their assets, pun intended, to his coffers.

Good god, man. When will people stop listening to these "rich" people who are so disconnected from the reality of the middle and lower income classes of regular Earthinlings that they appear to live in an alternate reality???

I'm sure he also sells it to them under the guise of it providing "local" employment opportunities.

I think it will take an architectural evolution beyond transformer, and coupling the LLM component to other neural-network models, making it more like a brain. Then, scale that massively. Power is the other constraint, and Nature has shown that biological computing can do a lot with little power. So, that could be the next step on the manufacturing side.

The masses want to use AI to make stupid videos, post them on TikTok and go viral. that is all. period.

I'm not sure you really understand what communism is

Kill the 1% and 99% of the problems with society go away...

So far, these have empowered the people who own the technologies the most. These big-tech technologies make a sci-fi dystopia a reality.

In some ways this will be a new era for humanity, but in others it's just a continuation of historical trends. As recently as 200 years ago, 90% of people were farmers growing food to survive. Advances in technology have steadily freed much of humanity to focus less on subsistence and more on the pursuits we choose. At each step, people have used our newfound productivity to achieve more than was previously possible, pushing the frontiers of science and health, as well as spending more time on creativity, culture, relationships, and enjoying life.

I am extremely optimistic that superintelligence will help humanity accelerate our pace of progress. But perhaps even more important is that superintelligence has the potential to begin a new era of personal empowerment where people will have greater agency to improve the world in the directions they choose.
