Airpods not working with windows 10

Hi, I have an ASUS - bt400 bluetooth dongle, with up to date drivers functioning on my windows 10 computer. For some reason I cannot get my airpods first generation to connect up. I can discover and pair the headphones in the bluetooth setting, however when I heard over to the sound control panel/playback devices, it is not showing up, and therefor I cannot use them for playback or recording. I have tried a few solutions, like deleting the hidden driver in device manager, and adding the registry line -
Regedit > HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{e0cbf06c-cd8b-4647-bb8a-263b43f0f974}\0000 > New "String Value" > Name it PnPCapabilities and set value 24 (screenshot attatched to show I have entered it correcly.)

thanks for the read, hope someone can of help!
