Alleged RTX 3090 Ti packaging could suggest flagship Ampere card is close

Rumor mill: There have been rumors of an RTX 3090 Ti joining Nvidia’s Ampere lineup since at least May, and it could be almost here—if, and it’s a big if, an alleged photo of the graphics card’s retail packaging is the real deal.

The purported leaked image from ITHome (via VideoCardz) appears to show an RTX 3090 Ti from Asus’ TUF Gaming series. Peeking out of the corner of the picture next to the PCIe 4.0 confirmation is a ‘4,’ likely the second digit of the 24GB of GDDR6X VRAM that the card has long been rumored to feature.

The buzz around a possible RTX 3090 Ti has been growing recently. Back in May, an entry in Zotac’s FireStorm overclocking software suggested the company expected one to arrive at some point, and we’ve been hearing more about a potential January release date.

There are no other specs visible on the packaging. If what we’ve previously heard is true, the card will be based on the GA102-250 GPU and come with 10,752 CUDA cores—256 more than the RTX 3090. Elsewhere, that 24GB of VRAM will reportedly run at 21 Gbps (more than the non-Ti’s 19.5 Gbps), thanks to improved Micron chips. It will also have 84 clusters, 84 RT cores, 336 Tensor cores, 128 ROPs, and a maximum memory bandwidth of over 1 TB/s.

But the most significant difference between the RTX 3090 Ti and the vanilla version could be the TDP. While the standard RTX 3090 has a not insignificant 350W TDP. The RTX 3090 Ti ups that by 100W to 450W. There were also rumors that it might feature a new 16-pin Micro-Fit power connector (above) that will supposedly become a new standard for PCIe Gen 5, suggesting the card will be compatible with the new interface, though it seems like Nvidia is saving the feature for its high-end RTX 4000 series.

Nvidia's CES keynote starts at 8 am PT on January 4. While we could hear about the RTX 3090 Ti (and some refreshed Ampere cards) during the event, don't expect any to be in stock or cost less than small lottery win when it does launch.

Surely this means they have to reposition/EOL some of the other high end cards. They're not stupid enough to have a 3080,3080Ti,3090 & 3090Ti.

Keep the 3080 but now with 12GB VRAM, kill the 3080Ti (hot running dog of the range anyway) , Keep the 3090 but price drops to $1K and keep the 3090Ti at $1500 ???

...But you still won't be able to buy any of them without sitting on Discord/Telegraph alerts 24/7

Are we going to need new power supplies for that 16 pin connector or will some sort of adapter or new cable do? Would kinda be a bummer for my Corsair AX1600i to turn into e-waste when it’s perfectly capable of delivering the juice needed.

Nvidia should, in effort to extract as much money as possible from whales, release a 3090, then a 3090 Super maybe a month later, then a 3090 Ti and then some sort of a refresh of the same. These guys will buy a new card every time out of vanity, the 5% increases don't concern them.

The TDM on these cards are way off. The 3090 in reality is known to draw closer to 375W, and some OC versions could reach 420W. So expect 3090Ti cards with 500W TDP, easily.

That's why after long research I ended up with 3080Ti instead. It has memory mounted on one side, not on 2 sides like 3090, which suffers from overheating because of it. That and the insane power draw, which is what turned me away from it, not the price difference.

Yeah but the RTX 3090 was less than 10% faster than the RTX 3080 and they even wedged the 3080 Ti in there. What we saw is that people bought them anyway. The RTX 3090 was especially insane but with a silicon shortage, people become dumb and buy anything. I have a co-worker who not only paid $1200CAD for an RTX 3080, he was PLEASED that he did.

I told him that he's fracking insane (and I didn't use the word "fracking").

If I hadn't already purchased my RX 5700 XT, I'd have just "suffered" with my R9 Furies until prices came down. I'll never be so desperate to play games at all ultra settings to pay more than double the MSRP of any card..
