The big picture: Amazon's friendly relationship with the theater industry is in stark contrast to the position that some of its rivals in the streaming business have taken. It could very well pay dividends down the road but just as easily come back to bite the company if it isn't careful.

Amazon Prime members in the US will be able to watch Aquaman in theaters nearly a week before anyone else thanks to a promotion with Warner Bros. Pictures.

The DC Comics film, scheduled to hit theaters on December 21 in the US, will be part of an early showing on December 15 at 7:00 p.m. local time. Prime members can purchase up to 10 tickets and take in the flick at one of more than 1,000 theaters across the country including branches owned by AMC, Regal, ArcLight Cinemas and National Amusement Theaters.

If you aren’t a Prime member, you can sign up for a 30-day free trial and still take advantage of the advance showing of Aquaman.

This isn’t the first time Amazon has partnered with the cinema industry. In 2017, Amazon offered Prime members advance screenings of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Hotel Transylvania 3.

Rumors surfaced over the summer that Amazon was interested in purchasing a movie theater chain. Should such a deal materialize, it would put further pressure on rival Netflix and almost certainly ensure further tie-ins with Prime members.

Hmmm... sounds like they're pretty confident the film will get good scores. If such an early viewing said otherwise, I'd bet that it would hurt first day/weekend box office sales a fair bit (considering DC hasn't been consistent with movie quality recently).

those are always garbage....why bother? spend the money to go and see it in the theater and then reserve any of that other silliness for when it releases to Blu ray.

It will be a 1080p or 2160p rip off Amazon Prime, not a dodgy 'hidden camera in a theatre' release.

Did you even read the article? Amazon's not showing it, Prime Membership gives you the ability to purchase a movie theater ticket through Atom Tickets for an advance screening at participating theaters.

So yes, it would be a "dodgy hidden camera" release.

Fark the scores. Comic book movies will make $600-800 million. Venom right now is near $800 million.

I'm not saying it won't do "well" at the box office, I'm just suggesting that if it gets low scores a week early, it won't get a great start.
Also, Venom is Marvel-Sony, not DC (like Justice League), and the fanfare for Venom has been great from the audience (not the critics).

Amazon here is a little something for you to chew. I don't need to be among the first to view. I can wait. It does not bother me at all not to have your Prime Membership. In fact if I did have Prime Membership, I would have dropped it the day you signed a deal with Apple.

Not a "prime" member. I'll wait until it comes to my local library. The theater experience is not worth it at any price, IMO.

DC has been **** ever since 'The Dark Knight' trilogy finished up, and I wouldn't consider that a true comic book movie either (loved it tho).

The Dark Knight was closer to the batman comics than anything live action before it. In fact the middle film in the trilogy was the only decent DC adaption since Hellboy.
