AMD is selling $60 billion worth of GPUs - and a piece of itself - to Meta

Editor's take: AMD and Meta have joined the growing circus of reciprocal deals Big Tech is using to bootstrap what it hopes will become a self-sustaining "AI economy." Under a new multi-year agreement, the two companies will closely align their technology roadmaps – though AMD's role comes with strings attached, including hitting specific performance targets in the stock market.

AMD and Meta have signed what they describe as a "strategic" partnership aimed at expanding large-scale computing capacity and continuing to bankroll Mark Zuckerberg's long-running AGI ambitions. Central to the deal is a massive 6 gigawatts of total GPU capacity, which AMD will deploy in custom-built data center racks for Meta. In return, Meta has committed to spending $60 billion on AMD chips while simultaneously acquiring a 10 percent stake in the chipmaker.

AMD says the "definitive" agreement deepens its existing collaboration with Meta, with both companies aligning CPU, GPU, and software milestones across their future roadmaps. Meta expects the first gigawatt of AMD GPUs to begin shipping in the second half of 2026, with the remainder of the accelerator deployment rolling out over the following four years.

On the hardware side, AMD will deliver a custom GPU design based on its Instinct MI450 architecture, paired with 6th-generation Epyc "Venice" and "Verano" CPUs. The components will be installed in Helios racks, a custom platform AMD co-developed with Meta. Meta plans to use the new infrastructure to train and deploy increasingly large AI models and inference workloads.

The financial side of the deal comes with its own caveats. Meta is set to purchase 160 million shares of AMD common stock, but the investment will only be finalized if AMD meets its shipment roadmap. Additional conditions include AMD's share price reaching as high as $600, along with other technical and commercial requirements that haven't been disclosed.

AMD CFO Jean Hu described the performance-based structure as one that "tightly aligns AMD and Meta around execution and long-term value creation." Zuckerberg echoed that sentiment, calling the agreement "an important step for Meta as we diversify our compute," and adding that he expects AMD to remain a key partner for years to come.

For Meta, the strategy is also about avoiding lock-in: buying AI chips and CPUs from multiple vendors while developing in-house accelerators in parallel.

This isn't Meta's only GPU bet. The company already has a partnership with Nvidia, though that arrangement doesn't involve equity purchases. AMD, meanwhile, struck a similar stock-linked deal with OpenAI in 2025, with the AI startup now expected to acquire a 10 percent stake in the chipmaker.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has previously said such arrangements surprised him, an observation that underscores the stark gap in market valuation between Nvidia and its closest rivals.

AMD CEO Lisa Su framed Meta's move as a significant vote of confidence. For Meta, the strategy is also about avoiding lock-in: buying AI chips and CPUs from multiple vendors while developing in-house accelerators in parallel.

AMD, Meta, Nvidia, and other Big Tech players now find themselves at the same table, circulating capital, compute, and equity in a feedback loop that critics argue is ethically murky – and potentially destined to end with a very loud popping sound if the AI bubble ever bursts.

I'm sick and tired of everyone circular funding each other because of AI - What a s**t show it's made the industry for everyone else.

Good luck on the $600 share price for AMD as well. At the time of writing this month alone it's down 39% from 1st Feb and seemingly didn't improve off the back of this announcement yesterday.

Could have sworn that the most hated company would be nVidia, Tesla, Microsoft, Google, Oracle, ENRON, BP, any major telecom or news network, Palantir...
Socialists hate pretty much every successful firm. How else are they going to sell their long-discredited ideology?

You (and the article author, apparently) misunderstand what circular financing is. Meta is buying AMD products, and also buying AMD common stock. AMD isn't funding Meta.

It's basically a Ponzi scheme and AI hardware makers literally lending money to customers to buy their AI hardware should be banned.

I kept telling you all AMD is not your friend (Hero) like you all praised them to be.

Zuckerberg isn't going to stop until he is in bed with everyone and the sheep will keep the ad revenue going on FB for it to be funded.

FB=Cancer

So, just as a thought exercise, if the wider society (not just the gaming community) decides to put their foot down and boycott every single company that willingly sold their soul to the AI devil, who is left?
Us. We'll be left.
Back to reading books. New work will likely include AI slop so either seek out proper ones or stay with the classics. Same for TV shows and movies.
The not-smart majority will probably just suck it up and there's nothing we can do about that. They will embrace the 100% fake world and literally live in a different reality.

A popular sentiment among some but let me explain something you're probably not aware of.
It's possible to use FB in a non-damaging manner. I.e. without ads (all sane web users run adblockers), fake news and influencer bullshit. <<<<<
I only see what my ACTUAL friends post, keeping me aware of what happens to them and the stuff they create.

But something else: in Januari 2025 my soulmate was on her deathbed literally on the other side of the planet.
FB Messenger made it possible to share her last moments, easing her passing considerably.
I would gladly have given asshat Zuck everything I owned in exchange for that but instead got it for free.

So there you have it. Not every FB user's a ***** on a brainrot drip. Many people actually use FB instead of being used.
FB's not difficult to tame for those that want to. And just for clarity, ad profiles dont/can't bother people who refuse all advertising on the screens they OWN.

AMD is eager to sell their soul...

OpenAI = 10%
Meta = 10%

AMD really hates themselves and still can't help but shoot itself in the foot.

Zuckerberg's so pathetically desperate to be relevant in the AI scene. It's like hanging a porkchop around your neck so the family dog'll want to play with ya.

You realize that public corporations, by definition, sell their stock to any and all who wish to buy, right?

Well this is not really selling it, but giving it away for FREE... Meta buys AMD GPU's and AMD will give META 10% shares in return. Quite sad actually, if Meta want AI GPU's they should buy AMD without any strings attached, this way seems like a desperate move from AMD to have other use their GPU's.

Why are you all so blind?

These contracts put AMD in a relationship of interdependence with key players, hands that will work to close the gaps in the software ecosystem, and will also boost the company's market value beyond $1 trillion. Lisa is playing well with the pieces she has.
