Analogue vcr to pc

I wish to convert my old vhs tapes to dv on my pc then edit using studio 9 plus. Am I correct in thinking I require something along the lines of Canopus ADVC-110 or 300 to convert from analogue to digital? I have a OHCI IEEE 1394 firewire card which would be the prefered choice rather than USB 2.0.

My sony camcorder pc5e doesn't have an analogue in option so I guess my options are limited.

Am I totally wrong with this way of thinking, any help would be greatly received.

That Canopus thing is OK if you can afford it and don't mind the overkill for your specific task. A simple TV tuner thing or a video card with video input would do the job.

In Maximum PC mag this month they cover what you need to have in decent detail to do what you want. I have a DVD XPRESS usb unit that works fairly well. You need a usb 2.0 port for these to work effeciently.
