The TARDIS is bigger on the inside than on the outside because it is dimensionally transcendental. This means that its interior IS inside its exterior, but that interior exists in a different, but relative dimension. This other dimension has a relation to ours in terms of spatial dimensions (i.e long, wide, high) where locations in the space time continuum appear smaller in our dimension than they do when perceived inside the other dimension inside the TARDIS. Thus, it is possible for the TARDIS to be bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. The best way to think of it is as a dimensionally transcendental hyper-cuboid.
