You confused the heck out of me talking about the 6800XT and then you typed in "5700XT" for your link, but then clicking upon it it took me to a 6800XT card.
Oops, sorry about that, yeah that would be confusing.
With that out of the way, it also depends on where you live and what you have access to for new GPUs. Take Micro Center, for example. 3080s usually go for around $1100, give or take. The 6800XT, if you can ever find them in stock, are generally $1300, give or take.
As much as I hate to say that over $1000 for a video card is good, those prices are good compared to many that I've seen. I chose newegg because with newegg, it really doesn't matter where you live, at least as far as Canada and the USA are concerned.
You have two cards that are close in performance and one costs, on average, $200 less and is also generally a lot easier to come by. People are looking to get the 3080 over a 6800XT.
I realise that and that's what confuses me. Their performance levels are so close as to be at parity with each other. Even if I didn't hate nVidia, I'd still take the RX 6800 XT because Radeons tend to age really well and that 60% increase in VRAM is just HUGE. It 100% ensures that it will out-live the RTX 3080, something that would be weighing heavily on my mind when shelling out money like that for a video card. It won't be long before 10GB is no longer enough but it will be a VERY long time before 16GB is no longer enough. The real kicker is that performance-wise, the RTX 3080 would still be a very viable card performance-wise when the lack of VRAM starts to be a serious hindrance. Since nVidia isn't stupid but is shady, you have to know that this is by design.
I suppose that while such things are glaring to me (because I've been buying video cards since before the ATi Rage came out), to someone much younger who knows nothing about video cards, this won't be so apparent to them.
The only upside I've seen so far for AMD is that the 6900XT cards at Micro Center have come down in price over the past 6 months. Most of them were pushing $2k at any given time for a good long while and inventory just sat because at the time the 3090s were selling for less, so people held out for the 3090. The 6900XT seem to be around a $1700 price range, aside from a hydro model that's still $2K or more, while the 3090s are all priced at $2k+ at Micro Center.
The RTX 3090 vs the RX 6900 XT is a different situation than the RTX 3080 vs. the RX 6800 XT. In that situation, if the prices are close, the RTX 3090 is definitely the better buy because it is the card with the massive VRAM advantage. While the RTX 3080 has LESS VRAM than even the RX 6800, the 24GB buffer on the RTX 3090 is a definite advantage over the RX 6900 XT's 16GB. There's no way that I'd even consider buying an RX 6900 XT unless the price was very close to the RX 6800 XT. For the same reasons that I'd take the RX 6800 XT over the RTX 3080, I'd take the RTX 3090 over the RX 6900 XT. My mind was still blown by seeing RTX 3080 cards selling for more than the RX 6900 XT however. I mean, that is just ridiculous, you have to admit that. Sure, at Microcenter it may be different but newegg is a much larger seller than Microcenter and Canada Computers
combined because it sells all over the world.
So, it all depends on your location and where you can find GPUs.
I agree with you but newegg's pricing does show that there are clearly a lot of fools who are willing to pay more for a 10GB RTX 3080 than the 16GB RTX 6800 XT and RX 6900 XT cards. The prices on newegg don't lie so there's a bunch of people out there willing to sacrifice 6GB of GDDR6 and a good chunk of change just to get a video card in a green box. That's about as smart as people lining up to pay $2000+ for the newest iPhone, as in, not very.
