Boot up problem

I have a dell dimension 8300 desktop with windows xp version 1.

When I boot up my machine, the dell logo comes up and then goes to a blank black screen, and at the top it says the following:

strike the F1 key to continue, strike the F2 key to continue

I strike the F1 key to continue and the machine boots into my windows operating system.

There are no other messages before the strike the F1 key to continue comes up at the top of the machine.

What is wrong with my machine and how do I fix it?

Just run setup defaults in your system setup screen, accessed by pressing F2 key. Then save and exit

I have an old Dell Dimension 8250 and I once had a previous fan failure message and was told to press F1 to continue. In the BIOS the fan failure event was noted.
