Hey everyone, i had a trojan hit my computer a couple days ago so i ran Malware Bytes right away and it did find a trojan. Got rid of it and most everything seems better but i still have small problems. I have been over at another malware removal forum and have run many scans and programs for the last few days and it all looks clean to them.

But i still have redirect issues the first couple times i click on links in a Google search. I have random audio coming over my speakers from time to time that is music/ads/commercials. But show no applications running in task manager.
I also recently noticed my email links no longer take me anywhere. It worked earlier today and i haven't changed a thing.

I always run malware/virus scans at least once a month. Probably about 8 different ones. Malware Bytes seems to be about the only one that ever picks up more than cookies. I pride myself on keeping my computer clean.

Can you guys help me out? These little problems are driving me crazy.
Thanks, Jerry.

Windows Vista Ulitmate.

Download aswMBR to your desktop.
Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it.
If you see this question: Would you like to download latest Avast! virus definitions?" say "Yes".
Click the "Scan" button to start scan:

On completion of the scan click "Save log", save it to your desktop and post in your next reply:

NOTE. aswMBR will create MBR.dat file on your desktop. This is a copy of your MBR. Do NOT delete it.

=========================================================

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  2. Close any open browsers.
  3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
    NOTE1. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.
    NOTE 2. If Combofix asks you to update the program, always do so.
    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
  4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  5. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  6. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt"
**Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
**Note 2 for AVG users: ComboFix will not run until AVG is uninstalled as a protective measure against the anti-virus. This is because AVG "falsely" detects ComboFix (or its embedded files) as a threat and may remove them resulting in the tool not working correctly which in turn can cause "unpredictable results". Since AVG cannot be effectively disabled before running ComboFix, the author recommends you to uninstall AVG first.
Use AppRemover to uninstall it: https://www.techspot.com/downloads/5514-appremover.html
We can reinstall it when we're done with CF.
**Note 3: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion", restart computer to fix the issue.

Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NOTE.
If, for some reason, Combofix refuses to run, try one of the following:
1. Run Combofix from Safe Mode (How to...)
2. Delete Combofix file, download fresh one, but rename combofix.exe to yourname.exe BEFORE saving it to your desktop.
Do NOT run it yet.
Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.
There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
Vista and Win7 users need to right click Rkill and choose Run as Administrator
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
Rkill.com
Rkill.scr
Rkill.exe
  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
Once you've gotten one of them to run, immediately run your_name.exe by double clicking on it.
If normal mode still doesn't work, run BOTH tools from safe mode.
In case #2, please post BOTH logs, rKill and Combofix.
DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!
The aswMBR crashes my computer every time i run it. When i click scan, i get a BSOD error a couple seconds after that. I tried downloading it again and running it after a reboot, but it does the same thing. I will give the other ones a try.
When Combofix restarted my computer, it came up with this error.
Registry Editor
  • Open the folder and double click on BurnItCD.cmd file. If your CD drive will open, simply close it back.
  • Follow the prompts to burn the CD.
  • Now you will need to set the CD-Rom as first boot device if it isn't already (if you don't know how to do it, see HERE)
  • If you have any questions about this step, ask before you proceed. If you enter the BIOS and are unsure if you have carried out the step correctly, there should be an option to exit without keeping changes, so you won't do any harm.
  • Insert the newly created CD into your infected PC and reboot your computer.
  • Once you have rebooted please press Enter when prompted to continue booting from CD - you have a whole 15 seconds to do this!
  • Read the warning and then continue as prompted.
  • You first need to select your keyboard layout - press Enter for English.
  • Next you want to select the appropriate tool. Enter 1 to choose 1. MBRWORK
  • On the following screen enter 5 to select Install Standard MBR code.
  • Enter 1 to overwrite the infected MBR Code with the Standard MBR code.
  • When asked to confirm please do so.
  • Afterwards, please enter E to leave MBRWORK, then 6 to leave the bootable CD.
  • Eject the disc and then press ctrl+alt+del to reboot the PC.
Once rebooted, run Bootkit Remover again and post its log.
This log looks exactly the same as the first one. The whole process went well but when i press 1 to overwrite the MBR code, it instantly went to the next screen like nothing was done (that took any time to do).
Could i have not burned the needed files to the CD? When i ran NTBR there were 3 files, but none named NTBR_CD.exe.
There was:
NTBR_CD ---a WinRar Archive
BurnitCD---- a windows command script
BurnitCDCC---- an application
I picked BurnitCDCC because it was an application.
Did i pick the right file to burn? Should i have burned the archive to the CD instead?
I'm not sure what exactly you did.
When i ran NTBR there were 3 files, but none named NTBR_CD.exe.
You download a file named NTBR_CD.exe, which you're supposed to double click.
It'll create NTBR_CD folder.
Inside that folder you'll find BurnItCD.cmd file.
Double click on that file to start creating bootable CD (you must have blank CD in your CD drive)
The BurnItCD file in the folder (1 of 3) has no ".cmd" behind it. It is a 1 kb command script.
Is that the file i should be copying?
Yes.
To see file extensions...in Windows Explorer got Tools>Folder options>View tab and UN-check "Hide extensions for known file types".
OK the way out.
Press F5 to refresh Windows Explorer view.
Same thing.
It didn't work.
If you did it right.
If you have Vista/7 DVD...
start with step 2
If you don't have Vista/7 DVD...
1. Create Vista/7 Recovery Disc.
Option 1 :
Vista: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/141820-create-recovery-disc.html (Option Two)
Windows 7: http://www.guidingtech.com/3816/system-repair-recovery-disc-windows-7/
Option 2:
Download Vista Recovery Disc iso image: http://digiex.net/downloads/downloa...6-windows-vista-32-bit-x86-recovery-disc.html
Download Windows 7 Recovery Disc iso image: http://digiex.net/downloads/downloa.../2659-windows-7-32-bit-x86-recovery-disc.html
Burn it to DVD: http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/G/Burning+ISO+Images+to+a+CD+or+DVD
2. Boot from created disk. You may need to set the CD-Rom as first boot device if it isn't already (if you don't know how to do it, see HERE)
Vista users. At first screen click on Repair your computer:
setup-option.jpg
Windows 7 users. At first screen click on Install now:
Select your language and click next:
25673d1251414836-mbr-restore-windows-7-master-boot-record-mbr_03.png
Click the button for "Use recovery tools":
25674d1251414836-mbr-restore-windows-7-master-boot-record-mbr_04.png
The following applies to both, Vista and Windows 7 users.
This will bring you to a new screen where the repair process will look for all Windows Vista/7 installations on your computer. When done you will be presented with the System Recovery Options dialog box:
system-recovery-options.jpg
After this, it will present you with a list of options including startup repair, system restore and command prompt:
systemrecovery.jpg
Select Command Prompt
Type in:
bootrec /fixmbr (<--- there is a "space" after "bootrec")
and then press Enter
Once completed then type Exit, press Enter and restart computer.
Post fresh Bootkit Remover log.
Same results again. Only thing i saw different in that process was i didn't see my operating system listed. I clicked next and it went to the choose recovery tool options anyway. Would i have needed to have an OP highlighted there for it to work?
  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows: OTL.txt and Extras.txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them back here.
It seems to be doing the same as when we started. Big stuff has already been fixed but a number of small problems still exist.
I have run this a number of times and never get the extras.txt file. Just the OTL.txt file.
I'm afraid that without successfully resetting your MBR we won't be able to fix this issue.
Let's go back to my reply #14...
What kind of DVD did you use to get to command prompt.
Is this straight Vista installation, no dual boot, or such?
When you run bootrec /fixmbr command what message are you getting after pressing Enter?
If you don't remember redo all steps.
.
It was my original Windows Vista Installation disc that includes service pack 1, 64 bit. No dual boot.
I'll give the original boot disc a try again and report back. I just remember it didn't show my operating system for some reason. I do have a partition and the OS is on my C;/ drive. Then it asked to load drivers to find it? the folder it opened had files that are way over my head so i just clicked continue with no OS highlighted. It then took me to the screen i could pick "command prompt". I can't remember exactly what it said after that. I'll try it again and get back with you.
Thanks for keeping up with me tonight.
It did not show an OS. It said "If you do not see your operating system, click load drivers to load drivers for your hard discs." I don't have any CD's that came with my hard drive. So i clicked continue even though it didn't shaow an OS.
I could then choose command prompt from the list of 5 or 6 items. I put in the command and it said "The operation completed successfully".
Did it really do anything if i did not have an operating system showing in the system recovery toolbox?
It did not show an OS
It think that's the reason why it's not working.
Possibly because you have SP2 installed and your Vista DVD has only SP1 on it.
Try to create the other DVD I mentioned in my instructions (case when you don't have Vista DVD).
There is a command on the rootkit text that says "to disinfect the master boot sector, use the following command "*****"
Would this program fix the problem too? Just wondering. I definately wont do anything without a yes reply from you.
I think it may have gotten rid of the redirect problem. ( I take that back) . The occational random audio programs in the background with no applications showing, is still there. Email hyperlinks still don't work. Thats all i see at the moment.
I took ownership of the System32 folder and created a boot DVD. Got the very same results. No OS system was showing.
Maybe tommorrow i will try to download a driver for the HD and see if i can get that to load.
Thanks for sticking with me tonight. Got alot done. I wont be on near as much tommorrow, maybe early and late in the day. Thanks Broni.
I do have some sort of registry copy i made that can be replaced if need be. Erunt i believe. Would that help me out? It saved my butt once before.
