I'm trying to install Windows XP Pro onto my Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop but keep on getting this error:
An error occured while setup was updating partition information on:
38155 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi {MBR}
Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3.

Any ideas on what can be done about this??

Does your Windows XPP have Service Pack2?
Reformat the hard drive. If the drive is more than two years old, consider replacing it... and definitely try replacing it for the test of the system.

yea I'm pretty sure I have to replace it but am trying to see if it can be fixed. I tried using the Higen disk utilities and stilll didnt get any good results. But does anyone know the reason why I am getting this error?

Most common cause is a hard drive failure. Second most common reason is a defective optical drive. Third most likely is a scratched or pitted install disc. Fourth is memory failure. Fifth is BIOS problems.
Have you tried cold booting to SafeMode to start the install from there?
