keep getting the blue error screen every couple of days for no apparent reason

You mean you`re getting BSOD`s(blue screen of death).

Go and follow the instructions in this thread HERE.

If that doesn`t help, attach five or six of your minidumps to a new thread in our Windows OS forum.
