1st post!

So here's a spanking new XPS M1710. Can't get the original owner. Grey screen password prompt.

So I've completely dissasembled it, following the service manual, and have scanned the mainboard under bright lights, looking for the EEPROM.

The problem is, is that all of the guides and information I've read are pretty outdated in my case - this is a fairly new Intel board. Actually this is the one of the 1st XPS passworded laptops I've come across while doing my research. Everything I've seen, says I'm pretty much screwed. My last attempt is here - the only 2 chips I've seen that might be the EEPROM, are:

MX - 156
25L8005M2C
24401000
Taiwan
0062314

and,

SPE20VP
- the reason I say this one, is cause it's got this written above it (on the PCB):
'U24U50'
which looked hopeful. The chip has cryptic characters on it, 4's could be h's; the orientation is wierd. photo?

any thoughts or suggestions are welcome.

Also, I've got the 'dell.pdf' from ebay, so if you wanted to look it over, I'll host it somewhere for you guys. I've also got a pile of good bookmarks, but all the links have probably been shared already.

good luck to the rest of you - while we all wait for Dell to lift this nonsensical policy. cheers

Dont forget that those manuals are intellectual property and the owner may take offence if you host it.

He cannot, he gives "mail to the guy" for free :p

Anyone know what it can be (Latitude D820)?

ATMEL 0606

SST25LF080 that I found before is for BIOS for 95% I think.

Hi I fix my problem with this tuto that I find in the web.

nope... you don't have to do that... just gotta jumper pin 3 and pin 6 on the "24c02", or "24u05", or the "24c164" or whatever chip resides in the location marked "upw1" (I think it stands for "unremovable password" lol) at least that's what it was on my D500... You really have to do some looking for it, mine was behind the PCMCIA slot.. only had to take the keyboard, one heatsink, and the pcmcia slot off.. then lift back the plastic, Carefully soldier wires to pin 3 and 6, then route them outside (I went through the fan opening), then put it all back together. then press the power button, short the wires for 2 seconds, then it "should" say "***Manufacturing Mode - Level [1]*** Press Fn-X to return to normal mode" then when you see this, press F2, after bios comes up, press ESC, choose "Save and exit" then reboot... if "manufacturing mode" still comes up press Fn-X and it will exit that mode. you may have to mess with it a few times, but don't leave the wires shorted for more than 2 seconds. "the first time I did it I got a overheating warning, and it was gonna be shut down.. don't worry bout that, you've come this far, try it again... it actually came up for me by doing the following
Step 1. press power.
Step 2. short wires 2 seconds.
Step 3. disconnect wires, wait 2 seconds.
Step 4. short wires again for 2 seconds,
Step 5. disconnect and wait for "Maintenance Mode" text.
Step 6. Hit F2
Step 7. Hit ESC, Choose save and exit
Step 8. Enjoy your unlocked Laptop (with NO service Tag)

ok... got that straigtened out.. but now it says "service Tag:Not Installed" in the bios, so it will not let you save a new admin or configure password, but you can lock the harddrive, so good enough. (I can just imagin that call to dell support. "What's the service tag number?", "It says 'not installed'", "WTF, How'd you do that????") LMFAOTIPMP

So if anybody knows how to set a service tag, or what other functions you could do from "Maintenance Mode Level 1",

This worked, cant believe it. I soldier one side and keept powering it up and shorten the 3rd and 6th leg. Finally it worked. It has to be shortened within the firts 5 seconds beofre the prompt starts to load.
My chip on inspiron 8000 was located under the cd drive bay and was named X24C02 and the manufacturer is Xicor. You can find the datasheet online at http://www.tranzistoare.ro/datasheets/70/289981_DS.pdf

I had the whole computer into pieces a couple of times, but you only need to unscrew the bottom screws marked in a circle with the letter K and one screw marked C and then pull out the cd bay. After those screws are out, open the screen and release the keyboard leaving it connected.
Then release the screw that is for the cd bay. There will be a little metal piece going into the mother boar, and you just have to push it and pull up the metal bay. Place a screw driver to hold it up and you will see the chip there. The dot on the chip marks where the first leg is. they go leg 1 to leg 8 counter clock wise. Be very careful not to touch other legs than 3 and 6. Best it to secure it by safely soilder it like above explanation.

Thank you guys for this thread!!!! Saved a laptop!!!

Hey Obi do us a favour, if your gonna refer people to the site can you use the title page www.ihatedell.info instead of the disclaimer page, i use a counter and this bypasses it.

Thanks

Hey Ididmyc600, sorry, I don´t like to support the service of razik on your main page, because I read this thread, among others on page 5 and 8.

razzik is a thief and a fraud! I paid him 50 euros for a d620 password. He said 24 hours and it has been over a week! He no longer responds to my emails so I have had no choice but to open a dispute with paypal!

He also doesn't have a generator but rings Dell up and trys to get the passwords from them.
