Dvd-rom playing/cd ripping crashes computer

My computer crashes whenever I use a cd or dvd in my drive. I am able to burn cds with no problem. The error mostly occurs about two minutes at most after I start playing a dvd game. It also happens when I am trying to rip cds to my hd. I have already switched out the actual cd/dvd with others that work, checked the drivers, and reinstalled a few dozen times. I can run anything and everything normally except for those two things. When it does crash, it is almost like it just turns off. So I never get any error messages, blue screens, warnings or anything. I dont even have to reboot in safe mode or anything, its like windows was just shut down immediately. I dont have a problem playing a cd. I am at a loss. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
