The big picture: Epic's upcoming digital storefront sounds appealing to developers as it'll allow them to keep a larger share of the revenue their games generate. What we don't yet know is Epic's strategy to attract players. Gamers will want some sort of incentive to adopt the platform.

Epic founder Tim Sweeney on Tuesday announced the Epic Games Store, a digital storefront that’ll compete with the likes of Steam, Origin and similar platforms.

Epic is going after the competition where it hurts most – the wallet. Whereas most game stores take a 30 percent revenue cut or have a tiered policy, Epic will only take a 12 percent cut, leaving 88 percent of the pie for developers. For those that use the Unreal Engine, Epic will cover the five percent engine royalty out of its 12 percent cut.

Creators that host games on Epic’s store will also have a direct relationship with players as buyers will automatically be subscribed to developers’ newsfeeds. Devs will also be able to reach the community through Epic’s Support-A-Creator program which has more than 10,000 participants.

Epic is planning to launch its new storefront with a hand-curated selection of games for PC and Mac “soon.” Over the course of 2019, it’ll be opened up to additional games and platforms, we’re told.

Epic promises that more details regarding upcoming game releases will be shared during The Game Awards 2018 on December 6.

I am all for the American free enterprise system but I must say that I regret seeing so many of these sale sites opening because it will require the buyer to root around to find their game while being subjected to an exponential amount of advertisements with no consideration to the potential client ......

Guess I won't be buying any of their exclusives....I own one game on origin, battlefield bad company 2. Steam was successful because it was convenient. The only game I play regularly that I don't run through steam is Eve and that's fine because it's an MMO but I still have it on steam.

I'm getting too old for gaming anyway

Aye, I stopped buying Ubisoft and EA games because of this very reason.

No I don't want to install a 4th, 5th, nth distribution platform. I could appreciate the effort more if I thought it was a legitimate attempted at providing a better service instead of a barely disguised shallow cashgrab.

It's bad enough I already that I'm being foisted with each OS storefront (Win10, & OSX), Steam, Discord, GoG, EA, Ubi, and now Epic. Bethesda too, no?

In theory more choice is good, but not if every asshat locks away their content behind their own walled gardens.

Can't we all just agree to use Steam?

**** all other games not on steam.

lol?

oh man, agreed there on that point. None of the other clients have ever even been close to touching Steam.

I already have installed Epic Games Launcher, if this new store mean better prices, I'm all in.

All this means is that developers get a bigger share of the sale, you won't be getting a better deal. All this means for you is that you need to use more platforo to download games

ffs it's V-Bucks. My spelling isn't that bad though, right?

Maybe referring to the "their" you used, instead "there"

"Their" means like belonging to. "There" is location or in your meaning, in the new app store "We'll be there!"

I think it's more amusing to see him complain about that, and screw up on using the quotation. Putting his own comment in a quote, making it look like he's quoting you. lol

No they are both his words. Follow the links [the arrow beside the name] in the quote.
