A hot potato: Facebook has deleted hundreds of accounts over the last few months for spreading political misinformation and fake news, but while the vast majority of these had Russian or Iranian origins, the latest removals were all US-based accounts and pages.

Facebook’s head of cybersecurity policy, Nathaniel Gleicher, and product manager, Oscar Rodriguez, wrote that 559 Pages and 251 accounts that use “sensational political content” were purged from the social network.

Facebook emphasized that the accounts weren’t removed for their content but because of their actions. It says they consistently broke the rules against spam and coordinated inauthentic behavior, noting that many were using fake accounts or multiple accounts to drive traffic to their websites.

“Many used the same techniques to make their content appear more popular on Facebook than it really was. Others were ad farms using Facebook to mislead people into thinking that they were forums for legitimate political debate,” the pair said.

“As we get better at uncovering this kind of abuse, the people behind it — whether economically or politically motivated — will change their tactics to evade detection. It’s why we continue to invest heavily, including in better technology, to prevent this kind of misuse.”

The company did say that part of the reason why it revealed details on the removals was the upcoming US midterms, which are only a few weeks away.

Facebook didn’t specify which accounts and Pages were removed, but the New York Times names Right Wing News and left-leaning pages that include The Resistance and Reverb Press, which had a combined follower count of over 4 million (Right Wing Press had 3.1 million alone). Other affected pages include Nation in Distress, Reasonable People Unite, and Snowflakes.

The Editor-in-chief of Reverb Press, Edward Lynn, said Facebook gave him no prior warning that it would be removing his page. He also disputed the company’s claims. “We are a legitimate news publisher,” he told The Guardian. “We are not fake news. We are not misinformation. We are not foreign. We are simply a small independent news publication trying to grow.”

Back in August, Facebook took down 652 Pages, groups, and accounts that originated in Iran and Russia for “coordinated inauthentic behavior.”

Facebook is a complete joke, they've suspended some of our accounts for discussing historically accurate attrocities that happened in Cambodia during the Pol Pot era! The pick and choose what information they want to be disseminated.

"They" don't pick and choose. Facebook is an intel creation and tool, nobody there gets to pick what stays and what gets censored. It's barely even a real company.

This all stems from Russiagate, the deceptive effort by DNC and Hillary to distract the public from the exposure of their manipulation of the primaries in 2016.

Now things have reached truly frightening proportions. Pressure on the elected government and social media sites has opened the door to censorship not just of suspected foreign actors but also of political dissidents in the U.S. itself. This is being guided by the Atlantic Council, a right wing organization aligned with NATO that includes defense contractors and Saudi and Israeli interests, and their main targets are antiwar pages on the left and right.

There needs to be a huge outcry, but I fear there won't be.

As for Hillary and Debbie Wasserman-Schultz -- lock 'em up! Those who yell "Fire!" in a crowded theater are responsible for all of its consequences. And I say this as a left-winger who finds Trump repugnant.

Idk its crazy that people take the things they see on facebook as facts
I think it's more crazy that Facebook bury and censor facts in order to protect people's feelings (and push their liberal agenda). Fact check: Facts don't care about your feelings.

IMO - anyone who lets any fakebook account influence their political decisions is a fool.

So you only trust things from major media outlets? GENIUS
I don't think he said to trust the MSM, which produces its share of fake news (and then retracts later). Personally, you can't even trust the fact checkers. Glenn Kessler, who is one of them, was interviewed a while back on NPR(?) and said most were registered Democrats and implied they were biased and slanted their "fact checking". He even admitted he had on occasion, but did his best to remain factual. Personally, I had my own experience with Snopes claiming something to be false when I knew for a fact that it was true (it had nothing to do with politics).
Whether you like Trump or not, I will say he has exposed the extreme left-wing bias in the MSM, TV/Cable news(yes, Fox News is biased to the right) and the Social web sites like Facebook and others.

At least Facebook knows what is fact and what isn't. They can be trusted to not have any bias or agenda. Just like our reliable sources of news.
