For Minecraft creator Markus 'Notch' Persson, life as a billionaire isn't all it's cracked up to be

  1. Money doesn’t buy happiness. Too much of a good thing is bad. More money, more problems. There are clichés out the wazoo that seem to describe the position that Markus “Notch” Persson has found himself in since offloading Mojang to Microsoft for a cool $2.5 billion nearly a year ago.

You’d be hard-pressed to find people that wouldn’t be willing to trade places but as Persson shared on Twitter over the weekend, not having to ever worry about money for the rest of your life isn’t as glamorous as one might thing.

The outpouring of emotions began when Persson pointed out that the problem with getting everything is that you run out of reasons to keep trying and human interaction becomes impossible due to imbalance.

He added that he was hanging out in Ibiza (one of the Balearic islands in the Mediterranean Sea) with a bunch of friends and famous people and is able to do whatever he wants yet he’s never felt more isolated. Persson said in Sweden, he will sit around and wait for friends with jobs and families to have time to do **** while watching his reflection in the monitor.

It didn’t stop there, however, as he said the biggest effort when selling the company was making sure the employees got taken care of. Now, they all hate him. The fortune may have cost him a relationship as well, pointing out that he found a great girl but she was afraid of him and his lifestyle and opted to go with a “normal” person instead.

Persson seemed a bit optimistic in the end, noting that others who have made success told him such feelings are normal and will pass.

The cascade of tweets elicited plenty of support from his nearly 2.5 million followers, many of whom offered to hang out or just open their ears if he needed someone to talk to. As an introvert, however, Persson said making new friends isn’t all that easy although he did say the outpouring meant a lot.

While it’s probably hard for some to fathom, Persson’s predicament is quite common among celebrities and the ultra-wealthy. Finding and making new friends when you’ve got a net worth in the billions presents obvious concerns while anyone with a decent work ethic would quickly become bored without something productive to do.

I'm not surprised by any of this. My best recommendation is (don't sell Minecraft, nvm too late for that) to get involved in some charitable work.

I'm also always looking to make friends but I'm figuring he wouldn't be interested XD

There is an obvious solution if it is too burdensome. While he says he is unhappy, he still chooses to keep ALL of his money. If you ask me happiness is not his concern.

LOL, yeah, crying into his drink in Ibiza, the "introvert" posts his billionaire angst on Twitter. What a phony.

    1. Get involved with community work.
    2. Stop living the billionaire lifestyle if you don't enjoy that crowd.
    3. Find a girl from an upper income bracket if you want a relationship.
    4. Start a hobby that's not dependent on your buddies being off work.
    5. For christ's sake, don't ever do anything for the sake of materialism.

His problem isn't an overabundance of money. It's a mindset incompatible with his socioeconomic position.

Statements like this are probably a large part of the reason he's unhappy.

If I had that kind of money I'd probably dedicate the rest of my life to charity. I did a good bit of volunteer work at a physical rehabilitation center that I found really rewarding. If I didn't have to worry about paying bills I'd probably still be doing it.

I though Notch had a nice normal girlfriend who he later married? Is that the great girl they are referring to in the article?

I don't have friends or 2,5 billion so stop complaining. And is that dandruff on the shirt? Get someone to take care of you, you have the money.

If he doesn't want his money, I'm receptive to taking it off his hands.

He seems to be wallowing in self-pity. Life doesn't end just because you're a billionaire. He can shop for new pants whenever he wants.

    What a load of bullshit
by saying you have no point in living after you got the money you are saying your original point of living was getting the money.

should I feel sorry for this nonsense ? you can still be productive you know even more productive with 2500 million $ to promote useful things.

Being rich just makes you dumb. He has nothing to live for and yet there are billions of hungry children out in the world, there's still no cure for cancer, and online gaming is still not cheat proof. Can't tell you how many times I wish I had an anti-cheat or reverse aimbot when playing FPS games. Achieve all this and then you can consider yourself bored Persson.

You are exactly right... There are plenty of things I can think of to keep myself busy if I didn't have to work for material things. So many things to do in this many places, people, possibilities...

Don't matter what ya got life is life no matter
  25. You know, I always figured being super rich wouldn't make anyone happy (so don't bother with the lottery, it's all deception). You never need to work, so you have no feelings of accomplishment and satisfaction in your job since you don't even need a job. What would you do all day? Everyone else is working towards their goals and making ends meet, and you don't need to do any of that. Of course he's bored. You know why Bill Gates doesn't seem to have this problem? He gives millions and millions away to help others. What this guy needs to do is something similar, like donate a billion to the Red Cross or something. He wouldn't notice a financial difference anyway, so while he's at it, give another billion to end homelessness and hunger.
