Gateway E4100 Integrated Sound Problem

  1. Hello, I was recently given a Gateway E4100 computer. It is a P4 2.8ghz processor with 512mb ram. The sound is integrated into the mother board. I cannot get any sound from it. It shows up in the device manager as Soundmax Integrated Audio and it says that the device is working properly with no conflicts. I have re-installed Windows XP to see if that would solve the problem and have updated the driver downloaded from Gateways website. I have tried two different sets of speakers that I know work and still cannot get any sound. When I run Media Player, it shows that the song is playing but still no sound and cannot get any system sounds.
Any help out there that anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Is the sound being muted by a key on the keyboard or other button?

I have already checked that. That happened to me once before. Thanks for the reply. Any other suggestions?
