What just happened? The Epic Games Store has given away some great titles since it launched in December 2018, but its next freebie is something extra special. One of the best games ever made, and still incredibly popular five years after its PC release, you’ll be able to grab GTA V for free today.

You might think there are few people in the world who don’t own Grand Theft Auto V, yet it continually appears in Steam's best-sellers chart—especially during sale events.

According to the list of best-selling games of all time, GTA V sits in the number two spot with 120 million units sold. Only Minecraft’s 176 million sales can better it. Rockstar’s title was also the best-selling game of the previous decade, beating Call of Duty: Black Ops, and in 2018, the roughly $6 billion it had generated made it the most profitable media product of all time, beating the likes of Star Wars and Gone with the Wind.

There were rumors that GTA V would be the next giveaway on Epic’s store, and the company confirmed it on Twitter. Prematurely, it seems, as the tweet was deleted, but it had already been screengrabbed by eagle-eyed users.

GTA V had been part of Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass, but it was only available on the service for a few months.

Providing you’ve got an Epic Games Store account, you’ll be able to download GTA V from 8AM PT/11 AM ET today until May 21. Be warned: you’ll lose much of your life to the multiplayer mode and messing around with mods.

Permalink to story.

The multiplayer is a train-wreck of asshattery, but the single-player story is outstanding. It gave me 60 hours of good fun and was one of the best games I've played.

It's not even the best GTA game I have played :)

Great game that I still occasionally re-play. Just can't believe it takes so long between them ..... sigh

You'll be greeted by "An unexpected error has occurred" message. Totally expected though.
HAHAHA I'm just seeing that right now. Figured it was just messing up locally, glad to know I don't have to try "fixing" it (again).

I just replayed the entire single player campaign last week for the first time since 2016. Its been 7 years since GTA V came out, the number of years between games is ridiculous, its like they are on a Halley's Comet release cycle.

nah dude find a good role playing server and you will be entertained for months.

I've been watching this one guys sessions on twitch for a few months and best laughs I've had in awhile.

To the point where I'm thinking of joining the server to role play myself.

7 years for console version
5 years for PC version.

Might grab it, I've already got it on steam though. I'd rather them remaster Vice City and San Andreas though and give those away.

So is that just it’s busy. Keep trying or is this a windup and it’s a joke of some kind?

Got it after *many* attempts and error messages. But it's in my library, so all is good :)

It took me 2 dozen login attempts with probably 8 captcha, just to get to the store. Once I got to the store I had to refresh the store to get it loaded. Once I found my way finally to GTAV, the first attempt put GTAV in my library.

Epic has a trash game client. I may have been late getting Steam. But I've never had any of these issues with Steam.

Yeah, it's not San Andreas. Rockstar had it for free on their launcher but it is an absolute mess where it would constantly crash and have input problems and all sort of other issues. Pirating the game gives you a more stable version than the "official" one.

I can't even access my account at the moment it keeps doing strange things, even looked like it logged me into someones account rather than my own and it was in a different language. If I do manage to get in I cant access any of my games.
