hard crashing problems

I have getting crashing problems but the screen totally freezes up no error messages no anything just freezes. I have no clue whats going on. I does this with any type of programs from games to FireFox. Tell me please if you need more information and thanks in advanced.

The computer is old at 3-4 years could this be the HDD failing? I found out that most of the crashes aren't giving me mini dumps. I guess this is because of the computer freezing in the way it does.

After a BSOD (my first EVER) and a restart I think it is the ATI catalyst 6.8 drivers I installed. After I installed then all the problems started so I am rolling back to 6.7. BTW thanks for the help so far..........

Ok the roll back fixed it. Thanks once again for all your guys help..........
