Solved Have connection but can't get online

Good evening, I hope you can help. I have a Dell Latitude laptop running Windows XP Professional. I can not get online even though I have an internet connection. I only have Explorer for a browser. I tried to set up Firefox and Chrome but tries to go online to complete the setup. I am posting this from my desktop computer so I can download tools from this computer and transfer to the laptop with a flash drive.

I'm sorry, I didn't think I had abandoned the topic. I did ask for help with my son's computer and I was very grateful when you were able to resolve the issue for me. I'm sure I thanked you for your help ... it wouldn't be like me at all not to. This is a different computer. I understand if you can't help.

Okay, I clicked the link you provided. I apologize ... I didn't see the last posts from you. Once the computer was fixed, I never even checked for any more posts. I assumed we were done. I never ran the procedures that you suggested but the computer is still working fine for my son. Thanks again for the time you put into that and I am sorry for the misunderstanding.

I assumed we were done
I suggest you read my replies more carefully.
At the beginning of every topic I always post my rules:

Please, observe following rules:
  • Read all of my instructions very carefully. Your mistakes during cleaning process may have very serious consequences, like unbootable computer.
  • If you're stuck, or you're not sure about certain step, always ask before doing anything else.
  • Please refrain from running any tools, fixes or applying any changes to your computer other than those I suggest.
  • Never run more than one scan at a time.
  • Keep updating me regarding your computer behavior, good, or bad.
  • The cleaning process, once started, has to be completed. Even if your computer appears to act better, it may still be infected. Once the computer is totally clean, I'll certainly let you know.
  • If you leave the topic without explanation in the middle of a cleaning process, you may not be eligible to receive any more help in malware removal forum.
  • I close my topics if you have not replied in 5 days. If you need more time, simply let me know. If I closed your topic and you need it to be reopened, simply PM me.

One of them says:
The cleaning process, once started, has to be completed. Even if your computer appears to act better, it may still be infected. Once the computer is totally clean, I'll certainly let you know.

Then when you didn't reply after 5 days I posted "Still with me?". No reply from you either so your explanation is rather weak.

I'll let it go this time but it won't happen again if you won't finish this topic with me.

==================================================

Please, complete all steps listed here: https://www.techspot.com/community/...lware-removal-preliminary-instructions.58138/
Make sure, you PASTE all logs. If some log exceeds 50,000 characters post limit, split it between couple of replies.
Attached logs won't be reviewed.

Thank you for understanding. Once I had said that it worked and thanked you, I never went back to the site so I didn't see your last posts. Anyway, I've had time to look into the situation a little more. When I first got the computer, it was having basically the same problem ... It could not access the internet even though there was a connection. I ran an Avast scan and found that the netbt.sys file was infected with the Alureon-AMS trojan. I quarantined the file. I confirmed that the file was no longer available with a Fabar Services Scan. That scan also detected that there were registry settings missing. I know that I need an uncorrupted copy of netbt at the very least but I do not have an XP recovery disc. I am not sure where to get this missing file or where to put it when I do find it somewhere and I will not attempt any registry changes without help. Right now the computer is just stuck in the "acquiring network address" loop.
Any help you can offer will be appreciated and I assure you, I will not make the same mistake again.

Thank you

Once I had said that it worked and thanked you, I never went back to the site so I didn't see your last posts
That can't be true because every time I reply (and I replied twice since your last reply) you get an email notification so you know I replied without even going back to the forum.

In any case....

NOTE 1. Use another working computer to download necessary tools. Use USB flash drive to transfer them from good computer to the bad one.
NOTE 2. Install Panda USB Vaccine, or BitDefender’s USB Immunizer on GOOD computer to protect it from any infected USB device.

Please download Farbar Service Scanner (FSS) and run it on the computer with the issue.

  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center/Action Center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
    • Other Services
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

============= FINISH: 20:16:50.90 ===============

I am sure that you did email me regarding the posts but I receive literally hundreds of emails daily from people that I try to help. I am a pharmacist, and much like you, I try to help people with their questions and concerns, only in my case, it is regarding their health and/or medications. I also work full time from home as a consultant so the emails tend to get backed up. I try to answer as many as I can but I have to prioritize the emails by the urgency of the question. Unless I am expecting a particular email from someone, it will often get lost in the mix, sometimes being more than 10 pages back. I am sending a screen shot of my email page from today. You can see that I have almost 8000 emails. That is about a week's worth of emails ( I try to purge the ones that I couldn't get to once a week). I didn't realize that I had ever received ANY emails from you during the last topic.

Anyway, I am running the FSS scan now.

Download wuauserv.reg
Double click on downloaded file and confirm the prompt.

Download LEGACY_WUAUSERV.reg
Double click on downloaded file and confirm the prompt.

Restart computer.
Post new FSS log.

Also see if your connection is back.

The first 2 registry files were accepted fine but the last one (Legacy_Wuauserv.reg) was not. Got an error message Cannot import E:\ LEGACY_WUAUSERV.reg : error accessing the registry.

Go ahead and...

Restart computer.
Post new FSS log.

Also see if your connection is back.

Okay, getting there. The connection is back ... no more endless "acquiring network address" but Internet Explorer can't access the internet. It tells me that it can't display the webpage.

Oh, I'm sorry. I tried to right click on it to select run as administrator. It gave me a dialog box where I could pick the "Administrator" account or the "x" account. I tried selecting the Administrator account and guessing at the password several times to no avail. I didn't realize that the "x" account had administrator privileges. I will run the scan now.

Whoa! tried running it and got a blue screen saying " a problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer." "A driver has overrun a stack-based buffer. This overrun could potentially allow a malicious user to gain control of this machine" It goes on from there.
